Mid rats in the Navy. White bread with burned crust, blob of jelly, slice of horse (Yeah that). Not intended to be a meal, just get you through the shift until breakfast mess opened. No, I did not re-up!

All we ever got was bologna with a little dab of mustard on stale bread but about 0200 we were looking forward to it.

bologna woulda been a nice change once in a while, something different to go with your bug juice than just peanutbutter from a big old can.

I rode the Saratoga, flat top, not bottom. She could take some pretty heavy swells, but I did see green water come over the bow a couple times. JW

you know, come to think of it i dont ever remember getting midrats on the lst. guess korean war surplus cans of peanut butter and stale bread were not in the budget for the gator navy at the time. always got them on the cruiser i was on.

One gal. Cans of PB & grape jelly never made it to the galley. Mid-rats.

I still love a good fried bologna sandwich. I have it cut at the deli counter 3/8-1/2" thick and fry it up with a nice crispy outside. a little cheese onion mayo and ketchup. Iv also done these slabs in the smoker occasionally with a light coat of barbeque sauce.
