Today I busted out my trusty Mossberg 590A1 and some loads I had worked up witht he Lee 1oz slug. Win AA hulls, CB 1138-12 (win 12R replacements) 44 gr of Blue dot, 2ea 20 ga nitro cards beneath the slug, win 209 primers. Accuracy wasn't as bad as I remembered.

However, the wads are toast. Seems like this tye of damage can't be good for ballistics. That's why I am wanting to try a new wad. Hence my other thread form today.

THose wads are really soft so they're gonna tear. The bases look intact though. Don't know what choke or how far you were shooting, but Cylinder is best for that combo. If wthat was 50 yds I'd say let it go. 800x is a no-go for 1 oz loads in 12 ga.

That was at 35 yrds with ghost ring rear and post front sights. Cylinder bore is what this gun has.

I see what you're saying about the base being ok. so the petals of the wad tearing off randomly isn't something to worry about?

I found data using 800X under the 475gr Lyman slug in Lyman's data at roughly 1500 fps. I am not doubting you on the 800X, but why do you say it's a no go?

My windjammer wads shed all the pedals. Recovered wads ot of an 8 inch tree showed wad sans pedals was firmly embedded in the bottom of the slug with the two nitro cards. Accuracy about the same as yours.

If you can find data with 800x and 1 oz ok but it's for heavier loads. Generally you can sub data for 1 oz shot loads. Not too bad a group for those slugs and smoothbore Ironduke. Even the original 12R wads were pretty soft and the claybusters are worse from what I'm told. Here are some lee suggestions but they will knock you silly.
