I have a friend who shoots a 50-140 smokeless in a Ruger No1 so not a normal 50-140. The problem he is having is he keeps going through namebrand scopes. Any advice on a scope which will stand up to the recoil.

The weaver k series is guaranteed to hold zero for 10000 rounds of 375 h&h. I've only got mine on a 223 but I've never had to adjust zero over the years and I've dropped it a few times.

Rings and mounts are important also on heavy recoiling rifle. Lepoulds are usually a very solid scope Other wise I might recommend a unertal style with the recoil spring removed. Allows the scope to slide forward and not be slammed back into place. Drawback is the scope has to be pulled back for every shot.

Bill Brophy used a 10x Unertl Vulture with sliding recoil spring mount, attached directly onto the barrel of a modified cal. .50 Browning M2HB used as a single-shot and semi-auto sniper rifle in Korea. Maj. Cutty and I tested the same outfit at Quantico in the early 1980s firing APIT M20 and Raufoss experimental rounds which became the Mk211 Mod 0. No issues with the scope.

SWFA makes high power scopes rated for semi-automatic 50BMG.

The Unertl sounds interesting. The problem is the rifle kicks more (quicker) than a 50 bmg, seeing as it is a lot lighter (Ruger No 1). His Leupold has been back to the factory 4 times already. I'll tell him about the Unertl.

A Trijicon ACOG would probably take the abuse but probably not the right look for a No:1

Yep, ^^^^^^ . Good quality Fixed power scope will outlast almost any variable in the abuse department. I would also be interested in the failed ones, academic interest only:)
