Will probably be a month or two before I can afford to buy any molds or other stuff for it, but I just couldn't let this one go....

Wow! Nice Swede! I really like the wood on that rifle! I can see why you couldn't pass that one up. I just got my second Swede last week, what nice rifles they are! Good score!

Right year for maple, and that is what it looks to be, but hard to be 100% sure. I wish it was all matching, but no such luck. Barrel bands and floorplate do not match, and it came with an
8mm cleaning rod. Other numbers match. Shoots good with FNM ball. fired all 20 rds at the same 50yd. target, and group was 1.5". Trigger was over 8.5lbs, so I polished the sear engagement surfaces, and installed a lighter return spring, and got it down to a smooth 6.5lbs. This is one that I have to take out and look at from time to time....

I'm 99.9% sure this is maple, not walnut. Sometimes its just real hard to tell from pictures on a screen.

Your cleaning rod is correct. The head diameter does not go down the barrel. There was a cleaning rod extension that screwed onto the end of the rifle's rod that went down the bore.

I'd check the handguard and stock serial numbers inside the barrel channel.

Nice rifle. And it is walnut!

Excellent wood. I lucked into a K31 with a tiger striped walnut stock but
no where near as nice as your Mauser.

Great looker, and the Swedes are typically great shooters, too.

Thanks guys, you make me feel a lot better about spending money I didn't really have. I have checked the stock and handguard numbers and they do match the receiver. Parts matching the receiver: butt plate, all bolt bits, barrel, stock, and handguard. I will be looking out for barrel bands and a floorplate numbered 398, but won't hold my breath. That is good news about the cleaning rod. I assumed the big end should go down the bore since it has a slot in it that looks like it is for a patch. I thought it was wrong, so I forgot about it for the pictures.

Now you know why milsurps are so addictive... especially Swedes!

Nice... very nice.

..............That end cleans the chamber. Just to ditto everyone else, "GREAT Wood". The extra money you spent to buy it will be all but forgotten next year. However you'll have the rifle to shoot and enjoy for many more years to come.

Dan, I think you majored in making people green  with envy.

I don't think you will go wrong with it, it is certainly a looker with that striped wood.

The 'Word around the traps' is that the Swede's like a little distance to sort tidy up the grouping (stabilize), I have also seen this theory shot down in flames.
You will just have to try it out over some distance and report back.

There usta be a Swede in these parts that looked just like that one: the stock wood was OAK. That said, yours appears to be tiger-stripe walnut in the pics.

I guess there is going to be disagreement on the wood. Hard to tell from pictures. The Dutchman says maple, Waksupi and Habcan say walnut. Here is a link the the rest of the pictures if that will help: http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n24/DanM2000/M96Swede/

Look at the grain on the picture of the front reciever ring. Walnut.

I refinish a lot of old milsurps and agree that's some beautifully tiger striped walnut. It's a beautiful rifle and one I would not ever sell, assuming it shot reasonably well. As far as the all matching, a lot of the Swedes had the mismatch you mentioned and I wouldn't sweat them.

Dave

I have built several maple and many walnut stocks and that definetly doesn't look like maple to me. It looks like european walnut and from the sixe of the pores in the wood I would hazard a guess that it it grew in orthern europe or an irrigated further to the south. Just my two cents worth for what it is worth. Definetly a beautiful rifle and chunck of wood. Sure wish that it was mine. Neil
