I have been comparing velocity and pressures for different powders. I have used unique and it is very good in the 45-70 in light loads. The AA #5 according to QuickLoad is also very mild with velocity and pressures. I know 5744 is very good, as I have that also. I have tried IMR 3031 also, but a lot of it does not burn. I have more of the AA #5 though and have considered giving it a try. I wondered if anyone else has tried AA #5 for the 45-70.
14.5 gr unique 1339 fps 18067 pressure and 100% propellant burned
15gr AA #5 1304 fps 13303 pressure and 100% propellant burned
36.5gr Imr 3031 1344 fps 8876 pressure and 68% propellant burned
24 gr AA 5744 1339 fps 10259 pressure and 82% propellant burned
These numbers are based on my 32" barrel Sharps 1874 Pedersoli replica and a 350 gr RF boolit
