I have the chance to buy 3 of these weighing in at 25lbs per piece at $0.80 cents per pound. Just curious what is it and what may be in alloy mixture? I cannot scratch it with my thumbnail, but it will scratch fairly easy with a pocket screw driver. They are marked NH Industries Inc. They are 7.75 tall, 7 wide and 3.5 deep (per half). Anyone have any experience with these items?

Looks like some sort of bearing housing. I have never seen one made of lead though.

My want to make sure there is no zinc in it.

Find a place with an XRF "gun" and get the analysis before investing in all three.

At least try the thumb nail test on it or try some side cutters on it . If I couldn't scratch or mark it in some pretty significant way, I wouldn't buy it.

They may be half a thrust bearing from a machine that used babbit bearings. These would be poured undersized and machined close and scraped into fit. The only other thing I can think of is a counter weight for some lift or item to balance and or support it.

At first glance I thought sacrificial zinc for a propeller shaft.

Non magnetic, doesnt pinch well with side cutters and looks exactly like those on the website.

Any purpose or reason to have zinc for the average boolit caster? I know a few wheel weights can ruin a pot of lead. Just don't know if it has any value to me at this point.

Only if you have a muzzle loading cannon.

'Only if you have a muzzle loading cannon'

Clearly a sign from God that the OP needs a muzzle loading cannon.

We used our zinc for fishing sinkers, jig heads and other fishing lures for awhile. But our moulds were home made steel moulds. The normal aluminum moulds sold might not hold up well to zinc and its casting temps. Another use that might be interesting would be if you could find some of the of lead soldier moulds.

could it not be traded for lead at the scrapyard, instead of hurtled across the countryside?

Lead prices will dictate if buying at .80 per pound and trading at a scrap yard is beneficial. For me, I can buy soft lead scrap for .70 per pound. It all depends upon your local scrap dealer prices and if trades are allowed.

Guys around here are buying zinc for fishing sinkers... plus the re-enactment guys buy it for cannon balls for when they do displays at the county fair. They do a wrecked car cannon shoot competition out in an old gravel pit that has a great hillside behind it for spectators.

At this point I'm not obligated to buy the Zinc. I've been buying soft lead at $0.30 and hard lead at $0.80 from this same person. Hopefully, now that it is properly identified, I can be honest with the seller and help them get the most out of it. They recently sold me 265 lbs of lead for $100 cash. Since they are treating me fair with the lead, I want to be fair and honest with them on the Zinc.
