I purchased a new Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70 back in February and have been enjoying experimenting with it. I thought I'd share my results so far. The rifle has a long range Creedmoor tang sight and front globe sight.

I'd read that the Pedersoli rifles with 1:18 twist barrels tended to like the longer heavier bullets better. I have indeed found that to be the case. I've tried 340 (Lee), 350 Hornady, 405 (Lee), 420, 480 and 535 (Lyman) bullets. Interestingly, anything over 400 grains has shot well. I've had very good luck with the 405 Lee over 24-24.5 gr of SR-4759 and the 535 gr Lyman Postell over 26 gr of 4759. Both loads give about 1350-1375 fps with single digit standard deviations and both printed 2" 3-shot groups at 100 yards. I've yet to try black powder but that is on my to do list. I also need to take the preferred loads out and try 5-shot groups to truly nail down the statistical accuracy.

I have found the 340 grain Lee bullet to group around 3.5" and the Hornady about the same at 3+". Not spectacular but good enough to hunt with.

In reading prior folk's experience with these rifles I had learned that best accuracy was achieved with velocities under 1400 fps. I agree. The sweet spot for my rifle seems to be around 1350.

So far, all of my cast bullet experiments with the 405 and 535 bullets have been with wheel weights and Lyman lube. Bullets were unsized and measured .4585 as dropped from the mould.

I am very happy with this rifle so far. A replica Sharps was on my want list for a long time. I'd drooled over the Shiloh and C Sharps rifles for some time but couldn't see myself spending that much. The pedersoli has been a good fit for my budget and given it's performance so far, a winner.

I've owned three Pedersoli Sharps rifles. All shot very, very well. I was able to get them to shoot an inch or just a tad over pretty regularly at 100yds. My results match yours.....400g and up and velocity at 1300-1450 produced best accuracy. All of the guns weren't very fussy about powder. I got good results with several powders. 4198, 2400, Rel7, 5744, and 4579.

45-70guy. several things to try with your bullets 1) try a slightly softer alloy to allow them to bump up better and quicker. this allows a better seal of the bore even quicker. 2) if they will chamber try shooting as cast dia pan lubing or finger lubing to test. Work from 1150-1300 with the postel. That's where mine shoots best. I have a pedersoli made cabellas long range with 34" half round barrel 34" long and its a real tack driver. It likes the 500 grn lyman govt round nose, The 535 grn postel by Lyman. My mould has be converted to nose pour, I got bored at work one night LOL. and also the 550 grn Shilouette by Old west moulds and Bernie Roweles. These bullets perform out to 500yds for me. I normally load in the 1200-1250 fps range with Olde Ensforde 2f BP. Also test at the farthest ranges possible 200 is good 300 is better.

Thanks for the advice. I should add that I have been finger lubing these bullets. I pan lubed the latest batch but have yet to shoot these.

For my next outing I plan to shoot at 250 yards (farthest our range has available). Also I intend to try some 1:20 alloy but I didn't have any on hand. As you suggested, I've read several who are suggesting using softer alloy. That is on my list to do.

This rifle has been a hoot. So much to learn from 1870s technology!

I load my Pedersolis with boolits made of 1:30 for excellent results. These match grade barrels are made with progressive depth rifling so you will find 0.004" deep at the chamber and 0.005" deep at the muzzle. This allows for seating a slightly oversized boolit into the case without binding in the leade area. My custom boolit weighs 545gns and casts 0.460".
