I have an H&G 4 cavity mold marked 50 BBS, I know the 50 is the mold number (146gr target WC) and bb stands for bevel-base, but what does the "S" mean?

Is it a shorter version of the normal mold? It is a murphy oregon mold if that makes any difference.

Thanks,
Andy

I'm not sure, but that has been speculated on some. Many believe it means special. As in a different diameter than what was standard for that particular bullet.

Special order. Different diameter.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check the measurements against the normal size for that mold. I appreciate you guys writing back so quickly.

Special. But not necessarily different diameter.

I once had a H&G 4 cavity marked #503S. Two cavities were 250 gr and two cavities were 280 grain.

Lots of good info here:

I have a H & G S242, it is supposed to cast a 160 gr, SWC out of linotype. I believe the regular 242 cast a 185 gr. SWG of the same configuration.
