View Full Version : Has anyone done ant penetration tests with WQWW with 44 mag HP boolits?

I plan on using my lee 310 GC for deer and black bear but have a lee 240g HP GC on the way. Figured it would be fun for yotes and plinking. Wondered how well they would do using WQWW as far as penatration and DRT performance on whitetails? I watched a YouTube video shooting in jel that the shooter went 28" at 1350fps and lost pedals...I'm thinking that would knock the heck out of a deer and tear it up inside pretty good.

It doesn't take much to penetrate an ant. The problem is measuring the penetration afterwards!

Lol had to take a second look on that one.

Maybe on those big carpenter ants. I use 243 spitzers.

Way too hard and brittle.

Add 2% tin and don't WQ.

Better after adding 2% tin add 50% lead.

Better yet, forget the WWs and use 20-1 alloy if under 1300 fps. Use 16-1 alloy if over 1300 fps.

I've been use HP'd cast in the 44 magnum since '68. The best terminal performance comes from maximum expansion WITHOUT losing the expansion petals.

No. But I have used the 250 Keith cast HP with ACWW. I seem to remember it weighed around 235. The results were not good. The load was a charge of 2400 I would be ashamed to mention today.

It was ok for varmints but I wouldn't shoot anything I wanted to eat with it.

I expect you would lose a whole quarter of a deer.

Your bullet is much heavier and slower so it might be OK but it is also much harder. I wouldn't waste my deer tag to find out.

I found this interesting, looks like over 2' of penatration...which would clear a whitetail broadside and shrapnel everywhere for DRT performance. I'm sure it would make a big mess...

No, but some guy and his girlfriend did a penetration test with a 50cal Desert Eagle.

I have shot deer with Keith hp's cast from aww and 50/50 pb acww. No real difference between them and Keith solids or the NOE 265 rnfp Ranch Dogs I hunt with now. Any of them put in the right place put backstrap in the freezer.

"NOE 265 rnfp Ranch Dog"

Michael has figured it out, as far as terminal performance and utility of the bullet. I have many of his designs, and they all work well. I mention it often, and some would get the vapors thinking about it, but his 135 grain RFP 9mm will easily kill a deer or a hog or a Goblin. The Magic Meplat.

When I first started casting, I was drawn to the allure of the HP. But that allure subsided and now I follow a different path...as jmort says, "the magic meplat", well, that and a balanced alloy like 94-3-3 or 97-1.5-1.5
A balanced alloy is a tougher alloy. Adjust the Lead content to meet the animal and/or penetration needs.
