I thought because I had to figure this out on my own perhaps somebody else could benefit from the information.

First off this model gets a lot of hate at 6lbs. with a 16.5" barrel and a saddle ring. It is a cavalry carbine meant to be worn mounted hanging over the shoulder. It has a very short throat but will seat long cases and even 405 WLN bullets will bump the lands seated to the crimp ring.

To the scope mounting. There is no standard scope mounting for this rifle and I found no decent information about it when I set out. I measured and did the math and scoured through every single weaver base to find the best fit and came up with the following: Using a #68 base in the front and a #54 in the rear was as close as I could get (as close as they make I believe) and allowed me to get close enough to use Burris Signature medium height 1" rings #420521 with 2 pairs of 1" ***-align inserts #626019 (you need two sets to get two of the largest offsets). You can bias the mounting for long distance shooting or to center the scope. I chose an ultra lightweight fixed power scope (6.5 ounces) and my end product looks like:198693

I know these were not popular models (although I plan on buying more) but they are out there and still being sold for under $900 new which is an aspiring High Wall owners dream if you ask me! I know I'as one.

Who or what brand is this action? Made - Italian or Japan? Interesting.

I used a #29 & #11 on my safari 1885 with weaver rings. Is the trapper different somehow?

Yours has an octagonal barrel (#29 is a flat base weaver mount) this one has a round barrel with a quick taper to match the short barrel. I toyed with using the #11 in the back on mine but the height would have been farther off (#54 is .222" vs. #11 is .147" tall or thick as Weaver calls it) 198707 With the #68 front, the mount sits proud right around .2" so the #54 rear at .222" is closer than the #11 at .147". So I could have chosen to be up .022" in the rear and compensate with the scope rings, or down .053" and compensate with the scope rings. Choosing the higher rear also gives it more flexibility for longer ranges without biasing the reticle of the scope so far.

Yep, I think that that little carbine would not be popular and could even be hated by the big bull elk that hide in a certain all but impenetrable Idaho black timber jungle.

Its light weight and short length would sure be appreciated, though, by any hunter in that or similar densely timbered and rugged country.
