2 years ago I was lucky enough to harvest this 11 point with a 30 Herrett MP 312-159 HP Powdercoated
It was a great day in the woods .. Late afternoon about 20 minutes before dark and this 11 point buck decides to cross the field about 70 yds away
I centered the crosshairs just behind the shoulder and fired the 14" contender
perfect hit.
Deer ran about 40 yds and piled up
and it was all because of what I learned here !!!

Fishman I have scored with both a 30 and a 357 herrett.
Next I hope to get one with my 14" 45-70 contender

Congrats, that is a Nice buck!

Load/ velocity with your Herrett if you have it available.
I have mine shooting about an inch at fifty (3) with RCBS 150 and I am guessing 1500-1600 fps

I started hunting when I started casting/loading and finally got a small buck last year, with a cast boolit that made from wheel weights. I saved the piece of brass... it's a neat feeling to go from raw materials to meat.

I did 10 years ago . a severe knee injury stopped the bike riding (75-80 miles a day was not uncommon during training ) and added about 60 lbs in 2 years

been trying ever since to get it back off

Hi Smoke,
A quik question, what did you use to crimp your rounds? I have an old set of dura-chrome dies that don't seem to want to crimp?
thanks, Mick

I use an RCBS Seater die to crimp

Lee is listing a factory overrun 30 herrett Crimp die

to top that off I was very sick that day .. running a fever hence the red face and triple layer of coats
Now add the vertical shoulder holster bulging out under the left arm and I look like a 400 lb drunk

kind of felt like one after having to muscle this buck on the 4 wheeler by myself and sick

are you talking about lee's collet style crimp?i use those but worry that they are swaging me boolits down, or might. I am going to go to roll crimps for a while and see if there is a difference

yes I am .. even if they were swaging the bullet down it would only be at THAT point of contact
As soon as the bullet moves the brass case will open up so its no issue at all

Marshville, the home of Randy Travis! Smoke, I've stopped by your shop before, but I didn't realize that I was talking to a member of this forum, and a fellow Contender devotee. I have both of the Herretts and still consider them ideal for the Contender.

My favorite is the 357 herrett with NOE 35-200 HPs. Deer usually DRT

10, 12, or 14 inch 357 Herrett?
What are you stoking behind that 200 grainer?

NICE buck there smoke! My last one tagged my rt. front turn signal and cartwheeled into the ditch, yep that 350 grain plastic lens did it in! It was freezer bound before it cooled off all the way.

I don't have a contender these days so next one will fall to the 45 Schofield New Model Vaquero and a 250 gr OWC from Veral. 1200fps airmail..

I have a 10" and a 14" prefer the 14 for deer hunting .
15.4 grns of 2400 gets me 1425-1430 fps
USING A 49/49/2 coww/pb/hsb the hollowpoint does a very nice job on deer
