Just picked up this beauty today.

I know it's a small frame, but what are we thinking pressure-wise for the .44 Special in this frame? Brian Pierce wrote about three different categories of .44 Special loads and I should think that the mid grade loads would be fine. He rates them at 22k psi.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

Colt SAAs and Smith & Wesson N frames were two of the main revolvers that the .44 Associates goosed up. Uncle Elmer's #5 was a Colt. Your mid frame Ruger is at least slightly stronger than a Colt single action in .44 Special. I wouldn't worry about strength. I would think at least 25,000 psi would be fine.

I would rate it to 25kpsi also.

The Ruger New Model Flattop Blackhawk in 45 caliber is safe with 45 ACP+P loads which are 23kpsi, and the 44 Special has thicker cylinder walls and thicker webs so 25,000 is probably a conservative pressure ceiling.

Nice gun, I am waiting for a small frame Vaquero in 44 special. Got tired of waiting so I bought a S&W model 21-4, then later a Pietta 1873 in 44. If I find a flat top, and the price is right I might still get one.

7.5gr. Unique under a 429-421 (Skeeter) would be a nice start. Beautiful revolver. Really nice.

7.5 gr. of Unique is my warm use load in my Colt's. 7.0 gr. of Unique is my daily use load in my Colt's.

That's a beauty, I'll admit to being a little jealous I'm back on a single action kick myself right now.

That is beautiful!!
I miss my 44spec BH.
Will look into this model for its replacement. Might even be my winter carry pistol.

One of the best guns Ruger ever made IMHO. Got 4 of em and they all shoot 429421 overy 8.0 of power pistol really well. Enjoy.

I have one just like that and I shoot my standard .44 Special Load of PC'd 429421 with 6.0 gr of W231. It's only a 15.5K load but it is more than enough for pretty much anything you'd need to do with that gun. Recoil is negligible. The Ruger BH is good for 25K psi according to articles I've read, but you really don't need to load that hot as my standard load is at 800-850 fps and a 429421 will go completely thru an Elk at 900fps.

I shot my SBH Bisley at Silhouettes yesterday and was using the same boolits with 8.0 gr of W231 and was a foot high at 50M and dead on at 200M It has a 5" bbl so I would expect the same results from a 4 3/4" BH with that same load.
