Ruger No. 3 - .44 Mag

I have a opportunity to get a Ruger No. 3 - .44 Mag.
Yes, I know, only a few were made in this caliber. Does anyone know what twist rate :?: (1:38 or 1:20 or....) they were made of? I only want to feed it with LEEs 310 grainer...:Fire:

As I recall, all Ruger's 44 mag rifles were 1:38, til they came out with the 77/44 which they made 1:20 for long/heavy projectiles.

yeah, I hear ya...but it should shoot 240gr boolits just fine, but ideally 200gr.

If you get it, I have one in 22 hornet or 30-40 krag that I would trade. The 44s are 1:38 as far as I know.

I have several #3s. I shoot 240 JHPs for deer hunting and 240swc/GC for plinking. I have shot
300gr jacketed, which at 100yds shot as well as 240s. I've got 44-375Wins-45/70s in the LV cals.
The only reason I'm fooling with them they are now legal in Ohio for Deer. I like the #3s but I
would rather use a more practical cartridge like 30/30 or 35Rem.

Thanks for your comment - 300 gr j-word... mhhh.... I have plenty of guns I use with j-words
This gun would only make sense and fun if it works with the heavy LEE slug.

Thank you John. My goal to shoot a slow moving lead slug, which is very venison friendly (eat up to the hole) and should have enough hp to "satisfy" Mr. wild boar as well - just in case...

The .44 Magnum's legacy was built on 240 gr bullets(jacketed & cast). Just use that weight. Deer or boar can't tell the difference between the 240's and the 300's. That #3 will be a fine hunter.

In the light No.3 carbine the recoil of the 240s is more manageable too!

I have used the Lee 310 in my marlin 1894p which has 1:38 twist with complete satisfaction to 100 yds. Now I use the NOE version of the ranch dog 265. I wouldn't worry about the twist a bit
