Tonight ran through the .457 sizer some of the RCBS 405 grainers (that's the gas check 45-70 design) and some of the RCBS 255 grain SWC's. Tomorrow will mold up some of the RCBS 250 grain round flat nose plain based 45LC types and get them patched too. Got some Lyman #457124's ready to wrap (usually just shoot them lubed). Debating on whether to cast some from the Lyman #457191 as I believe it too could be accurate. Oh, may as well. And I'd best check on the round ball supply just for grins.
Maybe can make smoke come Wednesday.

And copy paper patched some soft alloy Lee 450 grainers to see if they fly straight enough to develop loads with. Had to use a tiny amount of lanolin on them to size smoothly.
Well, got to head into town. It's MRI time for the knee.

Hey Good Cheer,
Is that a .50 New Englander? PP'ing them up to the .50 cal? More load data for this old guy to think about, please.

Yo 725,
It started life as a .54 and got a liner put in it.
Now it's a .458 bore diameter to accept .457 lubed lead 45-70 boolits. Previously I was shooting some paper in it and now gonna get serious with seeing just how good the paper will get.

I do have a fifty right hander with the factory 48" twist that I'm wondering what to do with. Getting a crazy idea about a longer medium twist barrel but dangit wouldn't it look nice with a full length stock? Really, I shouldn't entertain such thoughts.

Thunder bumpers on the way so not going to the range.
Tried out some brown coffee filter paper to see how it shrinks down and it looks promising.
The one on the right is for a .52 bore.

GoodCheer,
I've got a .457 ML that I'm starting to play with. It's a re-barreled Gonic. Slugs right at .457. In the past I've PP'd a Lyman 439186 (which casts at .432) up with two wraps of copy paper. Kind of loose but good accuracy. That was with an alloy. I'm going to try pure lead and see if it bumps up better. Never have recovered any, they just pass through the deer. Also, I'm thinking about a .456 sizing die for some of my .45 cal molds. I do like the .45's (actually, I like 'em all.)
A full length stock an a Renegade would be very cool.

Hey 725,
Is that a .457 bore or groove? Was thinking that if it's bore diameter the off the shelf Lee sizer might work for you.

groove. Sized @ .457 I can hardly insert a boolit. .457 is the smallest I have. Time to contact buckshot and get a .455 or .456. Just have to decide which.

Have you used coffee filters before? I guess I never looked to see what they were made from. How thick do they end up being? I assume two wraps?

This is my first go round with the coffee filters. I ran them all through the .457 sizer before writing down the built up thickness and now I don't remember. Got twenty of them made up. Will probably start with 70 grains FFg. 80 grains shooting the same bullet lubed lead works well.

I need to go look up the water proofing recipe that Paul Matthews used for patched.

And on another path, I'm wondering if there's a water soluble oil that can be used in the water for wetting patches.

I wrap mine dry so not much need for that.

I don't think I have any Ballistol squirreled away. Will look around as the shelves are arranged and some order returned to the toy store.

I have a New Englander that I had Mr Hoyt rebore to 52cal. I went with a 1-36 twist to match the old 50-70 gvt. Using a Lee 515-450F mold. I set the rifle up with the matching TC New Englander Peep sight and a Marbles white bead front post. Shooting paper patch. Maiden Voyage for the rifle yesterday. Once I got on paper at 50yds, started to show promise. Ran out of bullets before I could get her fully dialed in. Using just over one wrap of 9lb onion skin paper 1 32ga card wad and 70grns FFFG Goex. I need to get a .512 sizing die so I can reduce the bullet diameter from .515 to .512 then use a double wrap of 9#paper. Should be a great shooting little rifle.
