Does anyone here load for the 45-50 Peabody? I have had a rifle for several years; now have some brass formed from 50-70 Bell brass. Cartridges of the World says it uses a .454" boolit. I'm just wondering if anyone sizes .457" boolits. Shouldn't be too hard to do. Next question is....what do you use to crimp, 45 Colt? I could experiment on my own but thought I would test the waters here first. Oh, and I do have a 250 grain .454 Lyman mold, along with several .457s although I would only use the lighter weight ones.

mazo,
I have no knowledge of this cartridge, but would suggest that the 0.454 diameter could be the diameter to which you patch a patched to bore bullet.
a chamber/throat cast would reveal this.
keep safe,
bruce.

I was thinking along that same line.

For casual shooting (as opposed to match), as long as a .457-.458 slug will chamber (brass thickness determines), it will shoot fine with 10 gr Unique with a tuft of dacron to hold the powder over the primer, or else 3F black, enough to compress powder slightly upon seating the bullet. The factory load for this cartridge is, I believe, 340 gr, so twist rates probably aren't adequate for much beyond the 405 gr hollow base Gov't bullet. (available mold from Lee Precision)

Slug the bore. Use 45-60 data cut 15%.
