Marlin 1894 sights question

well I was looking for another part in my parts box and found 2 redfield slides for marlin 1894 with target knobs but no bases. Oops. Anyone know where I could find base(s)?

Do the new Remington/Marlin 1894 come drilled and tapped for the side mount lyman receiver sights?

No. They have one now that attaches to the scope holes on top. At least Williams has one, not sure about Lyman.

I personally think the Skinner sights are cleaner and better looking.

Since you specifically asked about 1894s. Mine is made by Remington.

Just be aware that most top-mounted receiver peepsights will also require a new front sight blade that's about .10" taller than the issue front sight, in order to achieve zero (otherwise, the rifle will shoot too high with the receiver sight adjusted fully "down").

If you replace the front sight with a blade, you can then adjust zero with a file and leave the rear sight fully down. On a hunting gun this makes a trimmer package, that is less likely to snag, and much less likely to suffer damage to the rear sight.

It's a shame that they are not drilling and tapping for the aperture sights anymore. Must be another cost cutting feature. That's too bad as a good side mounted aperture sight gives you a tremendous amount of flexibility for experimenting with different loads and bullet weights as well giving you the ability to shoot with established zeros at different ranges out to several hundred yards.

Ditto: but with the .44 Magnum if it is dead on at 100 yards you will need to adjust elevation for anything past that.

The Skinner Sights are really nice for pure hunting guns. But they are pretty much a set and forget type of sight, and if you are going to shoot silhouettes or anything where you need to be able to adjust and repeat a setting the Lyman 66LA is the way to go.

Drilling and tapping the receiver for the two screws is not that big a deal and any gunsmith should be able to do it for not much money. it's literally a 15 minute job.

W/ Skinners there is no set rule for sight height. The rear stem is adjustable on them so you have a wide range of heights available. I buy the largest brass blade and file it down for a particular load. W/ 44 and 357 you aren't going to be shooting much past 100 yards anyway.

Parts for Redfield and Lyman sights come up on Fleabay all the time, that's where I would look.

For the money its hard to beat a Skinner. Like hitting a walk off homerun, I just shot a 1 inch offhand 50 yard group with a Skinner on a Chiappa 357 this evening. Showed the guys at the range and put the gun back in the bag (357 MAG brass, 203 grain Lee 358-200 RF powdercoated, 13.3 grains of Lil Gun).

I have Skinners on my Marlins now as well.
