So.....you guys can't tell me you haven't had this thought before! I have a 30' oval swimming pool. Is that far enough to water test a .45acp? It's about 13,000 gallons if that matters. Let the fun begin.

Hmmm, we have a 27' round pool of about 17,000 gallons capacity. Problem is how do you steer the boolit straight? You need to shoot at a low angle into the water; will the boolit ricochet, go down, right, left....? I sure won't chance it! Better to line up several milk jugs filled with water and shoot them straight on, someplace safe.

I used to use a metal stock tank. It was about 8 to 10 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep. Fired at a shallow angle. Penetrated around 4 feet then fell to the bottom. I never had one ricochet off the surface but obviously at some angle it would do so.

I would not do it unless you have a large open area behind the pool.

Probably the best use for a swimming pool. :)

How deep is it?

Get a patch kit and give it a try.

I've been doing it for many years, got the idea from trying to shoot suckered in the creek. A 5ft deep pool stops pretty much anything with an expanding bullet. 22lr up to 4570. It WILL NOT stop a 255 gr .377 boolit on top of 8 gr of unique in a 375 win. Yep, keep a patch kit handy. Note, I live where I could shoot that 4570 from the pool deck and frequently do.
Don't tell the wife :)

I have 1 question, can I barrow your pool?
It will be for testing purposes only.

If you can find the full episode/segments of the episode, Mythbusters tested quite a few calibers up to 50BMG and most lost all their energy in about 4 feet. Here's the 50bmg part of the show, I'm sure the rest is somewhere on the internet if you are inclined to watch it:

There's a new sealing tape that is said to work well inside or out to stopper a hole. It's on TV so you gotta believe it works.

Make sure the wife is home when you do this, she needs a good laugh, :-). But you blow a hole in her swimming pond, get ready for a real adz whopping. I would be willing to watch....... from a safe distance.

Well there after watching some of the pool testing I find the thread to be quite intriguing. Good post
