Winchester 94 AE Re-Assembly question?

Hi all, I have a question about re assemling the winchester 94 ae's.

When you put the lever pin back in (the tapered pin that connects the lever end through the bolt that you cover with the cap screw) which way does that tapered end go? Facing the screw cover hole or opposite? I believe I remember tapping the pin out and the tapered end was facing outward ( towards the screw cap).

Does anyone have an answer?

FWIW, I don't recall if the lever pins on all the Model 1892/92 & 1894/94 rifles I had over the years had tapered pins, but it stands to reason that if one now has a tapered pin, the small end should be towards the side (RH) where the small hole for a drive-out drift is located.

IOW, large end toward the large-headed lever pin screw in the LH receiver sidewall.

One side is tapered more than the other side, both have a bit of a taper, but it is machined like that,

it is not the link pin, it is the "lever" link pin, but the older ones aren't tapered i dont think

There are 3 pins attaching the lever mechanism to the receiver.

The "finger lever pin" attaches the top end of the lever to the bolt.

The "lever link pin" attaches the middle of the lever to the (lower) link.

The "link screw" (pin) attaches the forward end of the (lower) link to the bottom of the forward portion of the receiver sidewalls.

The pin that I addressed previously above is the "finger lever link pin".

AFAIK, top-eject Winchester Model 94's were issued with an untapered pin in that location, so the tapered pin in your rifle may have been installed as an expedient repair sometime in it's past - or, if your Model 94 is an angle-eject 94AE, might have been issued with a tapered pin (IDK about the issue 94AE finger lever pin)


In any event, if the pin will enter the hole in the bolt fully, w/o either end protruding into the bolt raceway, just install it & the stop screw will prevent it going walkabout.
