Hey guys, what kind of powder are you shooting through your smallbores? What have you tried? Want to shoot that Pedersoli, but I am not sure which powder I should start with?

Thanks,
Jim

Most people would be using 3F.

Swiss 3F here, I haven't shot enough with my .36 to know much about accuracy, they make a neat 'Crack' I really enjoy the little .36 Seneca the times I've had it out, i just bought another one

3F or Pyrodex P. 20 gr in the 32s but I also am still working loads on the 36 but been working in the 20-25gr range.

So far I have only used 10 grains of 3F Goex in my 32 Cherokee with a round ball because that's what I have on hand, results at 20 yards have been very good.

The few times i have had my .36 Seneca out i used 40 and 50 Grains of Swiss 3F, the max load listing is 60 grains. I need to get out and shoot my little Seneca soon! I am waiting on the one i just bought since it has the factory TC peep and i am a peep sight shooter. I have a BUNCH of Hornady Round ball and patches, and the new rifle is coming with a Maxi ball mold, so I should be set

One of the best articles I have read on these small caliber muzzleloaders is "hunting with the small-bore small- game rifle" by Toby Bridges. All though he discusses several muzzleloaders the 2 that interested me most were the Seneca with as little as 25 grains of powder for 1600 fps and the Cherokee with as little as 15 grains for 1100 fps.

I shoot 30 grains in both of my .32's. A good rule of thumb, is same # of grains as caliber, .45 , use 45 grains, or close thereabouts, for target, plinking. I use 3ffg, in anything .45 or smaller, .50 or above use 2ffg. But recently, I have about started shooting 3ffg in most of my traditional guns, .32-.54, with great accuracy, just back the charge off about 15% of normal heavy hunting loads when going from 2ffg to 3fffg.

32/20 shell full of Goex 5FA in a 32 - 00buckshot pill - japara patch - have to use a mallet to start it - shallow rifling - a wesson copy - shoots amazing to 50 yards.

Been shooting 36's since the late 70's and my go to load has always been 20 grs. of Fffg. The last several years that powder has been Schuetzen. My use is 99.5% squirrel hunting and it's effective to say the least. Head shots are still a must on our little gray's if you want something left to eat.

May have to try that load, I recently picked up 36 caliber barrels for both the Cherokee and Seneca.

It's close to FFFg. Other than that... it's unglazed black powder.
I haven't tested to see what kind of velocities it gives weight for weight or volume for volume versus other powders as I just don't care. For fouling it depends upon your piece and how you load it as with any other.
I'm gonna give it a go in the .52 flinter Renegade to see it a more rapid initial pulse of pressure works to counteract the outflow on the flash hole.
The good points have been:
The price was right.
It works well in the pan.
While working in Louisiana it was a pleasant journey to drive over by Alexandria and meet the judge.

Not that it matters generally for our purposes but I suspect that it may give some increase in compressability with loading brass cartridges. Would perhaps yield a small increase in velocity if I used a press to load percussion revolver chambers. But I do not yet but would like to see what can be worked up with the Lee 41-195 SWC, with this NEI round nose and the Ideal # 41028 in the 1858.

The guy's at BACO told me they sell more Schuetzen than any other powder, i think its toward Clubs and such that buy LOTS of it. I bought a can of it in 2F, I haven't done enough with it to comment on it. I ended up buying in to Swiss powder and have stuck with it.

No black powder in Reno area!!! Played around with Black MZ and appears to have potential.

You don't need a lot of powder with the small bores. I shoot 25gr of Olde Eynsford 3f with a round ball and tight patch in my .36. With mink oil patch lube I can get 10-12 shots between swabbing with this load. Anything under 50 yards and it will almost take the head off a fat groundhog, and it will take the head off of anything smaller. You guys chime in if I'm off base here but this load should be cookin along at somewhere around 1700fps with a 25gr charge. With the 65gr ball that's plenty of "smack" for anything up to and including coyote inside 50 yards.

We were shooting 20gr out of the .32 and 20-40gr out of the .36. First time shooting these and the wind made it so the target stand wasn't working... Ya, we were just playing around, but having fun, with a capital F-U-N!
