I just got in 500 of the above bullets. Called Hornady and asked it they could be loaded in a tube feed 30-30. The guy on the other end asked if they were spiral point and I said round noise lead. Then he said it was OK to use in the 30-30.

When I got off the phone with Hornady I was not really sure about his answer.

What do you think?

Round-nosed lead are fine. Spire point NO.

I regularly load round nose jacketed bullets in my Model 1894 with no issues. That said, I don't load to the max velocity and recoil (I have mild shoulder issues). For example, I use 110 grain round nose out to ~2000 fps. I also don't crimp these loads. My reasoning was that if the recoil was unexpectedly high, I'd rather have the bullet get pushed into the case than have it set off a primer (lesser of two evils). Neither has ever happened to me. However, you might want to check the length on those bullets. I use a very similar Hornady 150 FMJ bullet with my 30-30 but when seated to the cannelure it is too long for the cartridge lifter to cycle it through the receiver-- I have to load and fire single shot.

Round nose is fine. Original 30-30s were loaded with them and for almost 100 years after.......actually when I was an LEO we had M94s in the patrol cars. Ammo was factory 160 RNFMJs.

Short answer. No.

You can sort of use SP bullets in a tubular magazine, but only load one in the chamber and one in the mag. Hornady does make a 150gr RN bullet that is safe in a tubular mag, but the SP bullets are not safe. I think you might have confused the Hornady representative or he might simply not know that much. I have no clue what a spiral point bullet is. Personally I would use those SPs for one of my 30-06s and buy or cast more appropriate bullets for my 30-30.

Look in the Hornady book and take it as your guide as to which works for 30-30.

I believe you're referring to the Interlock Spire Point. They are not safe for use in tubular magazines.

What is the item number on the box?

308 Jeff,

They are:
30 Cal.
.308 150 Gr SP
Interlock Stock # 3031

Gusser, good suggestion! Will look in the Hornady manual

Yeah not safe to use in a 30-30 tubular magazine. The 3035 is Hornady's 30-30 offering in the Interlok line.

Just as a side note......I tried 150 gr. pointed soft point bullets in 30-30 for use in a Savage 99 with the rotary magazine. I had to seat the bullets too deep in the case in order to get the OAL down to fit in the magazine. The RN is shorter and doesn't occupy your powder space. I had to drop to 125/130 Pointed bullets to make it work but then I'm defeating the entire purpose of the 30-30 cartridge, it's for deer, not gophers.

those 150 spire points will not feed either. shoot as a single shot or you will be unloading it out thru the loading gate........................... ask me how i know.:killingpc

I use Hornady flex tips in my 30-30. They shoot 2" higher at 100 than a flat point of the same weight and load.

Feed perfectly and kill doa.
