I posted this thread several days ago ;

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?335398-Have-you-read-the-entire-bible

It was to see if a thread dedicated to reading of the entire bible together would be of interest . The comments indicate to me that it would . It will take some time ...as it should . I will not venture into interpretation , that should be yours .
After much thought I believe the New King James would best serve this purpose . A slightly more contemporary translation than the King James .
I will also post a link to audio reading for those who might prefer it or use it in conjunction with reading the word .

This will take time but I feel it could be rewarding to many and it will be left in the Chapel for future use . I talked to Robert about it and he agreed .

If you have any reservations , concerns or suggestions I am open to your thoughts . Please contact me . I'm looking forward to this .

There are good translations that make the Bible sound as if it is for the contemporary audience (which it is). Why not select one that uses modern words and speech patterns?

Not trying to make things more difficult and if my suggestion does then please disregard.

Is the bible available as a "podcast'? I think many would download and listen at their leisure when away from the computer.

Audio files of more than one translation are available on YouTube.

Robert the Audio reading is like this ;

I don't know about an actual podcast but it's a consideration if can be found . I just never sought one out . As I said ..I am open to thought but probably pleasing everyone exactly is going to be iffy . I read a King James but was raised on it . I understand other's problems with thee , thou , thine and where for art thou's of the reading . I'm not mind locked , I appreciate ideas and participation . Many have different 'reading' problems , A verbal teaching is good and with playback you can listen as much as desired . Thanks for the question ...it will all come together !

I am not abject to a total contemporary translation . I am searching for middle ground . Many are as I was were raised on the KJV . Although I can accept modern/contemporary translations many older ones may not . Searching for a translation that can appeal to the majority . Do you think the NKJV is too hard to understand ? It's a huge leap from the KJV .

Hard? No, not especially. But it is written in language that sounds weird to today's audience. Most people, whether they like to admit it or not, will do better with a translation that is written in a style we read today. The Bible was written in the languages and styles of the original audiences. We should be doing the same with our translations. Why make it harder than it needs to be?

Translations and denominations
There will never be consensus
I strongly prefer the Amplified translation
Not sure why we all have to use the same translation. Are we all adopting the same denomination?

jmort you speak from understanding . There truly will never be a consensus . But I hoped we with faith could work together , to accommodate , to draw closer , to spread the gospel . To enjoy GOD's word regardless of what translation . It rents my heart to see Christians arguing , one GOD..one word ..one truth . At Pentecost different language was spoken but the message was the same , all of the same mind praising GOD . trying to please all by their habits is impossible but through love and faith in GOD I have to believe it possible . Thank you .

I agree with everything you stated above. What is your desired outcome? Please understand I'm not trying to discourage you and in fact if God has placed this on your heart, regardless of what comments come along, for you it would be disobedience not to do so.

Listening to Genesis now. Thanks for the link.

Like Boaz I have no issue with the King James.

If we are talking about the Bible, do the differences matter?
Every single one of us has our own preferences. Why even bring up which version?

I suspect as good as this group is, this particular question may be more than it can handle.

I will start thus. I will abide by the majority.

My desired outcome is simple . That we unite/combine to study GOD's word . To grow in faith . To grow in fellowship . To obey the great commandments .

Jesus was asked: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments," (Matt 22:36-40, Amp).

To lay down our conceptions and our misconceptions to understand another . To walk in another's shoes to love and to care . To worship together , experience together to do as Christ instructed . Childlike perhaps but we are to became as children to enter heaven .

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
7 ¶ Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

The message Jesus gave is simple . We have made it
too complicated . Dogma , worship practices .............. . His message was to love one another and to love GOD . He set none of the 'standards' we use . I'm a fundamentalist ... if I wanted tell everyone how I think/feel I could . I seek unity , basic common faith that is my goal . I need not tell you how to think ..GOD will direct you . I would only like to work together to stay on that path . I love you .

I believe your motives to be pure and from a correct understanding of Scripture. I would agree to participate and only 'make challenges' on the essentials of the Christian faith setting aside all other personal understandings, doctrine, etc. If I fail to make a challenge "speaking the truth in love" I will expect a correction. Understanding believers new to the faith as well as those well seasoned may participate, I too would suggest a translation (not a paraphrase) that uses common language like the ESV. I think it would also be useful for providing relevant input to maybe give us an outline of what you envision.

I still say read the translation that works best for you and that we all follow along. The books of the Bible, chapter and verse are all numbered the same. So I do not see a problem. If you drill down, for example, I believe that Genesis says God "recreated" the earth in Hebrew. So when do we start???
6-1-17 ???

Depends on your purpose. If you simply want to tell the story one of the simple versions written like a newspaper is best - The Book, Good News, etc. If you want to study some exegetically correct translation is necessary, and I often have three or four open in front of me when I study. There are a lot in between.

I am going to give it a whirl - Although I am a terribly slow reader

Slow wins the race . It will be slow paced , goal is to comprehend and understand . Plus it's a thread so you can go back and pick up if you miss a day or two . Hoping it will provide a reference or tool for members yet to come . Plus an audio reading if you just want to listen .

I suspect when people start at the beginning with an intention of reading through the Bible in "book order" they give up mid way through Exodus. Most of the Law is boring for today's readers.

A chronological approach can be much more interesting. This means reading Job while covering Abraham, the Psalms when reading through Samuel, the Prophets when reading Kings and Chronicles (of course Chronicles would be covered while reading Kings), etc.

It looks like there are reading schedules for chronological studies online for free:

Tips on Reading the Bible Daily

1. Start reading the Bible today -- there is no better time, and there's no reason to wait.

2. Set aside a specific time each day. Set your schedule and then stick to it. Mornings are great, but feel free to use any time that works consistently for you.

3. Read the Bible for the sake of learning, not simply to accomplish your next reading. Say a short prayer to God before you begin, asking the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding, then be refreshed by the words you read!
