There's a 260 grain wide flat nose gas check .458 diameter mold sitting in the box for about twenty years that I've always thought maybe would be a lower recoil boolit in a shorty 45-70.
For you fellas shooting the short barreled 45-70's, have you ever used a boolit under 300 grains? Did it work out or was it a waste of alloy?

Greetings
Have not in the 45-70 but have launched a whole herd out of the 45-60.
A 260 grainer was one of the factory loads for the 60 grain brass.

Well I'll be. Surely didn't know the 45-60 used that light of weight. Makes sense though to think about it.

Good morning
Was reading again and saw the "gas check" on that bullet. Never have fired a GC type in our 45-60's. Just feed them 40-1 and 3F.
Being a LBT good chance it was designed for a 45-70 Contender.
But there would be no reason not to fire it in a 45-70 rifle. Bet a 20-24 inch barrel could get it screaming down range like a ball of fire.
