Does anyone have experience with wsf in 44 special loadings? With both special and magnum brass.

I found some reference to it here. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?238346-WSF-in-44-Special

I know that wsf aint ideal for this application, But I have a couple pounds of it to burn, and I dont shoot much of anything its common in.

I'd appreciate others insight. What has worked and what haint ... where to start with 240 grain or 300 grain boolits.

Its similar in burn rate to Herco

Burn rate does not always indicate burn characteristics.

I use it in 45, 9mm and
40 for moderate loads and it works well.

WSF is my absolute favorite powder in 9mm. I haven't found anything that will come close to the performance in that little casing AND meters well in a progressive press powder measure.

That being said, I've never been able to get WSF to work in 38 Special, at least not to the level I want.

I have used WSF in 40 S&W and 45ACP with varying results. WSF worked pretty well for me in 40 S&W.

44 Special and 38 Special are both straight walled casings with more volume than they really need.

Could I make it work in 44 Special? YES, but even with some success I still went back to Unique.

Thanks for the replies. I know wsf aint ideal for either 38 or 44 special.

Might work OK with wadcutter boolits

IME, WSF is at it's best when you get up in the 20,000 + PSI range. I have used it in 9mm and 38 Super with good results, I suppose you might be able to get it to work in the Magnum Cartridges, but I have never tried. I only got it during the powder crisis when my usual suspects were unavailable. You might be able to use it in a good strong gun as a fairly hot, top end load in a Special case, but you would have to develop the load by trial and error.

ringtinglen, that was basically my estimation from looking over the loading books coverage of wsf usage.

I still haven’t developed a wsf load in 44 special. I have a lee 432-265-RF mould that I think would work good though as it both is heavy and deep seating.

Anyone have anything to add?
