I had been debating whether to send a 308 win barrel to Jes to rebore it to 358 win for sometime and along the way, the 35 whelen was also brought up as an alternative.
Well, I recently bought a 35 whelen barrel for my encore rifle and I can't wait to develop some loads with it using the Lee c358-200-F mold.
Anyone have any good loadings for cast boolits with the whelen?
Thanks.

In my Remington 700 .35 Whelen with a 1:16 twist, I use 25g of 2400 and the new Lee c358-200FN boolit. Velocity is 1899fps with an SD of 23.The boolits are quench cast from 10:1 alloy(ww:lino),and achieve a hardness of bhn 22. I hope to use this combination in the next CBA match. Accuracy has been in the 1 MOA area, except I occasionally get a flyer that is several inches from the others! I'm working on that problem now.

That sounds like a great load. Thank you for the info. I am going to work up a load in that direction.

I forgot to ask:
Do you use filler with this powder or is it just fine without?

With my 35 whelen encore imr 4350 worked great for my hunting loads.
with 200 gr., 235 gr., and 280 gr. boolits, i just sarted at 48 gr. and worked up slowly with each wt.

In my 1/14" twist bbl., i found accuracy best @ 54 & 1/2 gr. with the 200 gr. and 54 gr. with both the 235 gr. and 280 gr. boolits.

Velocity was 2,228 fps. with the 200 gr. and 2,222 fps. with the 280 gr. boolits.
Accuracy is in the 1 1/2" range and less @ 100yds. with unweighed boolits and 1" or less at the same distance with weighed boolits.

Alloy is straight ww heat treated @ 165 *, then water dropped. bhn @ 27 in 3 to 5 days after ht.

I do not use any fillers with 25g of 2400 in the .35 Whelen.

That is a long boolit!
I had just received my 35 Whelen barrel and I will be getting ready to tested when I have the chance. This weekend will be difficult as I have to go to a graduation party.
Anyone know what is the turns per inch ration on the 24 inch wheathershield encore barrel?

TC Encore 35 whelen bbl. are all 1/14" twist.

Thank you 35 shooter.
I loaded 20 rounds with Hornady 200 gr Interlock bullets to smooth the grooves so I can start loading the cast boolets. Since I don't have yet the 35 whelen sizing die, i am using my 358 win dies just fine.
I've got a 2" plus at 100 yards 3 shot group after sighting it in.
My load was 50.6gr of aa2230 and S&B LR primers.

I've got some cast bullet data from Accurate with several of their powders and the aa2230 powder is one of them.
They list 52 gr. as max with a Lyman 205 gr. rn for 2702 fps. and 53,700 psi.

That sounds like pretty good accuracy for that fast of a powder at the speed your shooting.
I had to go to the slower powders like in the 4350 burn range for the speed and accuracy i wanted in my whelen.

If you have any powders in the 4064 to 4350 range, it might not hurt to give them a try too while your working with it.

Sounds like your off to a good start with your whelen!

It's been a long time since I got bumped by the scope and this 35 whelen just reminded me. Did not leave me a mark but the scope is damaged from the recoil. The scope was not the best kind and this rifle kicks prety good.
My next test will be with the c358-200-RF Lee cast boolits. I will be working up to the 25 gr of 2400.
I will als shop for 4064 or 4350 powders to give it a shot.

I did not read carefully your note. The data I had for the AA2230 was from one of their free booklets I picked up from an LGS and it listed the Hornady 200gr (jacketed bullet) at 2400+ fps with 49.6gr of powder. The load you mentioned is using the Lyman cast boolit in 205gr at 2700 fps.
I prefer to get near 2000 fps with cast boolits and using the least amount of powder that achieves good accuracy (el chipo).
Do you have any such loads you want to share? My nest try is the 25gr of 2400 powder with the Lee c358-200-RF 200gr boolit.

It's going to be hard to beat the load Shuz suggested with the 2400 powder in the 1800 to 2000 fps. range for accuracy and cheap shooting.

4759 worked well for me in that speed range for some cheap and accurate loads, but of course, they don't make that powder anymore.
