Anyone have a favorite load with 150 grain cast for a marlin 336?
Lee 150 gr. GC, thinking about using 2400.
Just a plinking load.

2400 should work well. Somewhere in the 13 to 15 grain or so range but check with Lyman on your charge. Marlins generally prefer a fat bullet. I have one which likes .312" bullets. Shoot as large a diameter as your rifles throat will accept.
Good Luck,
Rick

I have a 336 RC made in 1955, I think. It is a 20" microgroove barrel, topped with a Weaver 2.5 scope.

I use a Lee 309-150 mold that I beagle. I then gas check and size to .311". I load this over 25 gr of IMR 3031.

It is boringly, reliably accurate to 140 yards, the farthest I have shot it.

For plinking 2400 is very good, as is R #7.

7g of Unique behind a NOE 311-165 plain base boolit of Bhn 22 gives me 1153fps sd of 21 and a 1.031" 5 shot group at 50 yards outta my 1979 Marlin 336 .30-30. It's like a 22LR on steroids!

This web site will offer all the information you'll need to select a target practice recipe using ~ cast ~ as your choice of projectile. (link)

As I recall. 2400 is a powder many here prefer for >cast use<-> in their hunting cartridges.

Haven't as yet read anyone shooting reduced loads of 2400 for the purpose of plinking.

I had no luck with 2400 in my 336 using that bullet. Unique and Trail Boss seem to work much better for me.

Unique seems to be one of those powders that work..... most anyway you use it, from plinking to heavier loads. I LIKE Unique

16.5 grains of 2400 under that Lee 150 grain bullet is very accurate from my marlin 336 microgroove. Using 1/2 coww, 1/2 range scrap and an ounce or so of tin for alloy. Sized to .311. Chronograph reads 1700 f.p.s. Lyman 4th Cast bullet handbook shows 13 to 17 grains. Hope this helps.

For a plinking load about 5 grains of Bullseye or Red Dot with no filler. Fun as it gets.
Best, Thomas.
