I have a 44spl but no 44spl brass; however I have over a thousand 44 mag cases. Is there any reason I should not just shorten some of my 44 mag brass to fit the 44spl?

TIA

I've done it, but it's a lot of work.

How about finding a trade partner?

I've done it too and I ain't doin' it again. I'm with clum trade it or sell it and buy spl brass. Besides, it does end up a little thick for longer projectiles if your chambers are snug.

Just took a look thru the ole brass closet and only found about 70 or so, I must've traded off the others at some time. Sorry bout that.

I've motorized my case trimmer so I guess I'll give it a "whirl"...I don't mean to do the whole thousand-plus just a hundred or so to get me shooting...The thickness is mainly what I was concerned about.

I trimmed .44 Mag down to .44 SPL with a L E Wilson case trimmer using the Q style holder and I didn't have any problems with the thickness.

When .44 Magnum brass develops splits at the mouth, I will trim them to .44 Special length. I have probably 100 or so that I've done. No problems with thickness, just FL size, expand, and load like any other .44 Specials.

The .44 Mag with split mouths is what I used for a lot of my .44 Spl also.

My 44mg brass gets recycled to 44sp, then to 44 Russian, then to Junk bin.

Lee case cutter on a drill is your friend. 3-4/minute, doesn't take long to do 100.

Or you could just ream out the chambers slightly deeper and use the .44 mag brass in the .44 special revolver. If the .44 special revolver was made to SAAMI specs, the cylinder should be long enough since according to the SAAMI page, the .44 special is *slightly* (0.005") longer in OAL than .44 mag (i.e. 1.615" vs 1.610"). I suspect DougGuy could do that for a reasonable price.

My sentiments exactly. I tried the trimmed 44 mag brass an they worked in my sons Ruger 44 spl Blackhawk(Lipsey gun) but they were too thick for my S&W cylinders. Starline, thankfully, solved the problem with 500 new cases.

My 44mg brass gets recycled to 44sp, then to 44 Russian, then to Junk bin.I do this also beside some of the other brass too.
