Favourite 6.5x55 setup

I have a CG 63 in 6.5x55 swedish in the mail and on the way as we speak, and I am curious as to what peoples best loads for the cartridge have been? I'm particularly interested in anyone's experience paper patching the round as this is apparently an exceedingly accurate rifle and it would be nice to shoot something with a bit more velocity so as to reach out a little further than 100-200 yards.

I have had good luck with my M96 Mauser patching up the Lee 170gr. "cruise missile" bullet over either WC860 or Retumbo powder. It will produce ballistics very close to issue ball ammo and tracks to the sights out to long range.

And that boo lit is good with your twist rate? Isn't that a little heavy?

The issue ammo was around 144 gr. IIRC. The cast one is close to the same length. The twist in those barrels is wicked fast. They do best with long bullets.

That's a special order Mold is it not? How much is it to get lee to make a custom Mold? There's a guy not too far from me who makes moulds, but they're cast and I like my Lee aluminum one so far.

It wasn't special order when I got one. Well, maybe a bit. They were in stock at Midsouth Shooter's Supply, but they may have had Lee make a run for them.

.257" IIRC. It needs to be about .001" over bore size.

One thing I found with paper patching smaller caliber boolits - they need to be long to be able to roll in my fingers! (I patched for my 25/303 with 120gr and they were quite do-able. Never pursued it though. I was using a home made two-diameter smooth sided mold with adjustable nose shank).

Twist rate for m/96 is 200mm = 7.87".
For the CG63 it is 220mm = 8.66".

Original bullet weight was 156 gr round nose.

That is good to know. I didn't realize they were different. 170gr. might not work too well in the CG63!

Design and before i got te husqvarna i had an cg 63 rifle. Both rifles do well with this design.

What was your setup? PP or just lubing?

Update, the rifle finally came and I just got dies for it. Only had enough IMR 4198 to make 9 rounds, but all but one made it onto paper. 2 at 100 yes and then 5 at 300 yes (one flyer and one I lost to a poor height adjustment). Still debating as to what to do about a mould. I would really really like to paper patch and maybe get the velocity over the 2k mark for some longer range shooting (this rifle just begs to be shot at distance). However I'm unsure as to weight. Dutchman, you were saying you don't think the 170gr would stabilize in the 1: 8.66 twist? I know very little about cast design, but don't heavier bullets stabilize better in slower twist?

Which section is it in? having trouble finding it.

That 140 that Edwin41 mentioned would be a good place to start. I didn't realize the twist in your rifle was slower than mine, I doubt it would work with the 170. Might check with NOE and see if they have anything that would work also.

These were the first steps in this paperpatching thing for me and a lot of tips and hints were put here by the more experienced patchers .

so , I have hooked up my computer now , I was fumbeling with my phone and that wasn't one of my better ideas.
with the help from others I got some good results paperpatching the 140 gr lyman bullet.
I think its real important to protect the base of the bullet , 303 guy had done some testing and research in this matter back then.
I noticed that the bulletbase was the same size as the discs that came out of a standard office perforator , and I started using them by wetting them and sticking them at the bulletsbase , then wrap as normal.
I punched them out of some glossy paper for more of a stronger base .
second point of interest was the bulletbase itself , this was getting deformed by my way of sizing.
I trued up the base by converting my lyman case trimmer , more of a touch up , but a good set up for uniforming the bullets.
for me these are two very important steps...

its been a while since i handeled my rifle due to circumstances , but i am sure to pick up on things in the near future .
for me its an ongoing process ... still learning and improving my load .

Wow, thanks a lot. So you ended up sizing to .255? I'm considering ordering a custom mould so maybe I could just get them to make it to that diameter in the first place. Hmm. Food for thought.
