This is a pretty incredible story, our boys flew America's baddest fighter aircraft just 30 FEET off the surface of hundreds of miles of open ocean, under strict radio silence, with nothing but a magnetic compass, a wristwatch, and an airspeed indicator to intercept the most important Japanese commander of the war, and shoot his aircraft from the sky, effectively demoralizing the entire Japanese navy and very likely turning the tide of the Pacific war. Pretty impressive no matter which version of the story is the real one!

The mission was kicked all the way upstairs to the President - needed Presidential permission because knowledge of his location was available through MAGIC (code breaking) and the mission may reveal to the Japanese our ability to break their codes. It was decided that the risk was worthwhile. There was a minority of officers in the Japanese Navy who believed their codes vulnerable, this was not enough to cause them to be believed.
Charles Limburg helped out on that without knowing.

True, he taught the Air Force long distance fuel saving flight. Made this mission possible.
