I'm hoplessly old school........

Nevermind​ that the front of my high school in Fallon NV says "The Old High School" right across the front of it .

I've found that I'm growing to like the old simple things . Not through any conscious effort it's just working out that way . I have a couple of companion pairs , 92' Winchesters sure they're not originals but they are some parts fitting copies . They shoot a cartridge that pre dates their design by 19 yr . Their companions are a double action built 99 yr ago and 1957 enhanced SAA revisited made in 1976 . I know a BlackHawk is about as much an SAA as a Peterbuilt but it is closer than LCR or an XD .
I was looking at my rifles I have 2 cartridges less than 50 yo and only 2 more under 60 the rest are 80+ , even that spiffy new hotrod the 257 Roberts . All the rest are over 100 .
For pistols there's just 1 cartridge under 85 yr.
Just 2 pistols whose design is under 60 but even the autos are over 85 , nope not a 1911 in the bunch .
Even the scatter guns are wonders from another time . A quick search suggests that even my BPS is a dinosaur whose parents predate my favorite the model 12 Winchesters ......

Yes, they built a new high school and "The Old High School" is now the junior high school. So why not simply call it the junior high school? If you're a real redneck that would be like calling your brother Jim instead of Jim Bob, or your sister Mary instead of Mary Beth. Or your cousin your cousin instead of your wife.

I can relate. Old school for me too. Pondered the purchase of a 100 year old Marlin awhile back. It was almost too new.

I'm stuck in the 1860s when it comes to guns these days......the new ones seem to get used less and less. I sometimes find myself mildly offended by the smell of smokeless.... I have a problem.

I finally updated my deer rifle to the 30-06.
I figured I better get with the times and quit using the 7x57 now that the Mule deer have finally spoke with their white tail cousins and got bullet proof.
the Elk haven't figured out how to do that just yet so I will stick with the 8 Mauser for them a while longer.
I'm working on getting the 8mm Lebel up to speed for future use though.

In handguns I have a 25+ year old .40 S&W as the youngest cartridge, which is rarely reloaded, after that the 60+ year old .44 Mag and 80+ year old .357 Mag are the youngsters. Everything else is 110 to 140 years old, 44 Spc to .45 Colt. A large part of the reason is I'm more a revolver shooter than an auto, and all the niches for revolvers I'm interested in were filled a long time before I was born. Autos, particularly modern polymer models just don't do anything for me, give a S&W N frame any time over tupperware. In rifles the mid 50's .223/5.56x45, .243 Win and .308/7.62x51 are the most recent, everything else is 110 to 140 years old again, .30-06 to .45-70. Sitting on my project shelf right now are 8x57, 7.65x53, .30-06, 7.62x54, 7.5x55, 7x57 and 6.5x55. I do have a number of AR for different purposes; service rifle, match rifle, varmint rifle and SHTF, but none of them have the character and class of 100+ year old walnut and steel.

I think that marlin is in better shape than my 1920's made Win. 92 rifle in 25-20, the carbine too now that I think about it.

It is interesting that my favorite "fun to shoot" guns are based on designs from the late 1800's (two SAA's, three 1894 Marlins, 1873 Uberti). The notable exceptions are the AR's that are both fun to shoot and excellent SHTF rifles. For "serious" work, the Glock or Kahr are my go to guns for carry, M500 Mossberg's for SD, a tricked out M700 .308 for LR, and a M70 .308 for game. The most "modern" caliber I have is the .40 S&W.

I had a brief attraction to the .338 Federal but realized that if offered little over the .308 for hunting in MI...just a new toy. And what would I do with the .308?

For 99% (WAG) of our needs, there is not much the "new and improved" calibers offer that we really need...just marketing hype. And I want calibers that do not need expensive or difficult to get brass.

Except for the AR's there is little gained for my needs with "modern" rifles and calibers. And I certainly would feel a loss at not having the Glock. In my opinion, nothing "old school" comes close to the AR or Glock for SD.

My safe is full but I still enjoy looking and at 75 I still enjoy looking at the young ladies lol

Maybe, depends on how a fella defines 'better shape". Bore was shot. Original chamber was the .25-20 Marlin. Reline on the barrel chambered in the Winchester style, it shoots well now. Couple or three new parts on the internals too.

Worth the journey it was.

While fudging a little I have several Hawken rifles , a couple 1858s , 1860 and a second model Dragoon , a few of which are actually 40 yo or very close to it . I figure I get a pass on those for having an 1871 issue stamped 1866 Chessipot .

Funny you mention Ideal moulds. I feed the Marlin and a Stevens 44 (.25-20 SS) with an Ideal 257283. First time I put the Marlin on the 100 yard butt it put two shots overlapping thru the X with that bullet and 6.0 of 2400.
