My latest purchase of a guide gun has renewed my intrest in the 45/70. my real passion is hunting with a handgun. I've plenty of experience with HOT 44 loads. Anyone ever handle a BFR in 45/70......

The 10 inch version is seemingly calling me.

You otta contact 44man. He's got one. From what he's said loading for it is some different than for a rifle. The short barrel will not burn the slower powders, etc.

Yup, talk to 44man. I've shot his BFR in .45/70 (and his .475) extensively, and it is a great piece! Very accurate! The only downside that I can see is the size of the revolver -- they're jus a bit on the unwieldy side. The .475 on the other hand has no shortcomings as far as I'm concerned!

I've handled one in 45-70 and obviously have one in 500. and other calibers, but anyway. The biggest limitation I would think is barrel length and powder burn. I don't think that they are that bad to handle. Definitely not an ankle holster gun. all depends on what you want. 44man will chime in or you could always pm him. He forgot more today than I'll ever know.

I've got the 45-70 BFR and Ken (45Nut) does as well. You'll be hard pressed to find a better revolver for the $. The 10 incher is a great gun. Buy one - load with 4198 and never look back.

A WONDERFUL gun except it is BIG.
It is more accurate then any 45-70 rifle I ever shot. I have worked with every powder made, plus primers. I found SR 4759 is the best. Good velocity and works with all weight boolits. The gun will shoot good with 300 to 400 gr boolits.
I use Fed LP mag primers. No need for rifle primers.
The gun can get boring it is so accurate. My best group at 50 yd's is 5 shots in 7/16". Cans at 100 yd's from sandbags are just too easy. Trouble is, smaller targets are hard to see with a red dot.
But so is my .475 super accurate.
Here are some average 50 yd groups. The sighter target at the left has two 5 shot groups with my smallest in the center. The right one is 10 shots. Oops, should be bottom center.
