i have been shooting a pellet gun @ 50 yards for the last 10 years. scope/open sights peep sight, ect, its the distance i feel most comfortable shooting at.( for precision )

would it be in my best interest to test my reloads at that distance ? i feel comfortable shooting @100 yards but i can watch the cross hairs move on a 5/8 dot @ 50 yards vs the cross hairs moving around a 1" dot @ 100 yards ?

this might be a stupid question, but i like to take things out of the equation as much as possible.

Sounds like you might need a better rest setup to give you more stability.
I have a similar problem at 200 yards. I use 3/4 inch dots and with my 36X scope I can see the movement inside the dot. I need better stability also.
For sight in/testing distance--you use what you feel comfortable with. I start at 100 and move to 200 because the differences show up better at longer distances.

if you reduce your scope power at 50 yards to give the same (geometric) sight picture you feel "stable" with at 100 yards, you just "may" see the same stability at both distances.

+1 that is the technique I use and would recommend to anyone as well.
