How low of powder charge is possible using IMR 4198 and a 200 gr bullet in the 358 win for sub. load. 10-15 gr. ?

I would guess that would be much more efficient with a pistol powder in that speed range.

I would like to know what a full power load would be with that powder?

Howdy !

Based on t I've read about "Secondary Explosive Effects " here and elsewhere, the charge wt of 4198 you mention sounds
too low ( IMHO )

I'm running 18.6 -18.7gr w/ 150gr brass bullets in a .35 Rem M-336 XLR, and those charge weights are already low.... and that's in a smaller capacity .35 cal case..... shooting lighter .358" caliber bullets.

FWIW.

I wouldn't go that low . Quick glance at my old speed manual and about closest I can get is data for the 8mm x57 (similar case cap.)they have data for reduced load using 200 gr and 4198 , 28 gr is max 24 is minimum load , velocity for the min load is 1459 fps.

Better to use a faster powder if lower speeds are your goal .

If you able to find some, Trail Boss is a pretty safe way to get slow speeds.

I asked because I had my measure set wrong and loaded 50 rd with the light charge. Will just pull them and start over. I have been using 24.5 gr with good results.

IMR4198 would be a poor choice for sub sonic loads under a 200 gr bullet in the 35 Remington. It will not ignite and burn efficiently.

Use Unique. Start at 5 gr and work up to 9 gr. Some where in there the bullet will start to crack. Where that will happen depends mostly on the bullet and barrel length. BTW; 9.5 gr Unique is the starting load in Lyman CBH #3 under a 206 gr cast bullet so there should be no pressure problems. The Unique will ignite and burn efficiently. I recommend no wad or filler.

Dang it! I would pull them as well. Rereload those things.

Hodgdon, who also distributes IMR powders, has a warning about reduced loads with IMR 4198. The old 60% rule supposedly still applies to H 4198. I'll never know, because my BLR has a preference for IMR3031 over anything else I've tried.
