I've been working on a Top Secret Project, well, it was Top Secret until now. I need some dimensions off of the Lyman 4 Cavity mould blocks. If you have a set of calipers and can pass this info on. I only need three dimensions, if you can post your findings as "A" = 0.000, "B" = 0.000, etc., it would be greatly appreciatted.

I'm assuming that Lyman is using a #8 screw to hold their handles and 4 cav moulds togeather as well, please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you have other moulds, NEI, Mountain, etc., I'd appreciatte dimensional info from those moulds as well, just make sure you clarify what make and # of cavities.

Thanks in advance.

Rick,
Glad to see you are on the mend.

The screw that holds the handles to the mould is 12-24.

Thickness of handles = .250”

Thanks for the info gentlemen, much appreciatted. However, I need as much info as possible. An "average" dimension is what my goal is, so I need more than one posting with dimensions, if you can help, please post your findings.

Again, thanks.

I have one for you.

A= .667"

B = .259"

c = 3.005"

Mounting holes are centered in the "C" dim. and .175" from the edge of the of the mould blocks to the center of the screw hole.

I hope this helps.

I do have a new style set of Lyman handles for their 4 cavities coming in the mail, when they get here I will measure them and get you the dimensions.

I would like to see a side tab style sprue plate for use on the Lyman 4 cavities now that standard style handles are available, will send you info on it.

Glad to see you are recovering!

Gentlemen, I appreciatte the dimensions, they'll make my life easier.

Not limiting this required info to only the Lyman 4 cavity. If you have other moulds, make and model not important, perhaps some of you could take the time, do some measuring, and pass the required info on.

Thanks

All the info submitted so far has been a great help, thanks guys.

I just thought some might be interested in knowing. I've finally completed my drawings for the tooling/die requirements for the 4 cavity mould handles "Lyman Style". Blanks for the handles should be laser cut within the next month (I hope) or so. By that time, I should have the forming dies completed and heat treated. I'm hoping to have these handles available by the beginning of September, if all goes well.

More good news, at the same time, I will have handles to fit the Lee 6 cavity moulds. The tooling has been made and a few Proto-type samples have been made. I'm just waiting for more (some changes were in order) laser cut blanks and should be able to get some more samples togeather for evaluations.

Here's afew pics of the 6 cavity handles. First pic has a pair of the "Regular Style" handles for comparison.

It is so good to see you on the mend!!:-D

I was hoping you might pick this project as a sort of "rehab" effort.[smilie=1:

I tried measuring my NEI 4 C Aluminum GB mould, but I am just not a "Machine Quality" technician. FWIW, this is what I get:

A: .755"
B: .310"
C: 3.25"

I can't tell you what the screw size is, but the mounting holes appear to be about centered in the C dimension.

Welcome Back!

I need some more info regarding the LEE 6 X moulds. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciatted.

Two questions;

1) What size/#/diameter does LEE use in their 6X moulds.
2) What is the diameter of the hole in the LEE 6X mould handles.

Thanks

At $4.65 a day how many lunches will I have to skip to get 4 of those Lee six banger handles?
My back bone and my belly button had a meeting yeaterday, and decided my throat must already be cut.
This saving money by casting sure is expensive.

I have mailed out some proto-type samples, for evaluation, to those members whom passed on needed information for the new 6 cavity (fits Lee) and 4 cavity (fits Lyman) mould handles.

To those members whom I've contacted earlier via PM, you should receive your sample handles within the next week - week and a half. All I ask in return is that you hold out with posting any comments or feedback until we know that all is well (one never know's, and yes, I do make mistakes).

So, if everything works out OK, and there are no setbacks, these new handles will be available, very soon.

Once again, thanks for your help gentleman. :drinks:

The Lyman "Nut Cracker" style may be a possibility, but I'm not so sure about those H&G handles. I'm doubtful that there would be enough of a market out there to recoup the tooling costs required to make those extra, extra large H&G handles.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

4-hole Lyman #358495 (old one)
A=.666-.672" (depending on where you measure them)
B=.255-.257"
C=2.998-3.001"
Screw thread = .216 major dia. x 5/16" long, with 24 tpi pitch
Screw Body = .219 OD
Entire screw length = 1.135" & its headless.

Those are some nice looking prototypes you whipped up there. It's a shame that I don't need a set.

Okay, for those whom have been patiently waiting for these new mould handles, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, I have some more handles made to fit the Lyman 4 cavity moulds for sale, the bad news is there is only a limited number available, only 15 pair (the remainder are spoken for).

My previous attempt with these new mould handles didn’t end in a total failure, it just proved that there was room for improvement, with a few minor changes. So, with the input and recommendations made by some of the members, I’ve made revisions and have manufactured a limited number.

My only concern is the material used for the laser cut blanks, by my supplier, is not what I spec’d. I requested “Pickled” plate (acid washed to remove the scale) and I didn’t get that, they say otherwise. So, there is some minor scale on the material, the finish could have been better.

I will be making more handles, but I would like to see what the feedback will be like regarding “Fit & Function”, on these.

Here are a few pics of the handles (mould courtesy of “Happy7”, thanks Happy7). These pictures turned out quite dark, the metal components of the handles are not as black as they appear in the photos.

If anyone is interested in buying some of these mould handles to fit the “Lyman 4 cavity” moulds, I have 15 pair for sale. Price is $27.00 (Cdn) per pair, shipping, handling & insurance are extra. I will not be able to ship any items until after January 4th, 2009.

The first posts that say, “I’ll take X pair”, and sends me a PM, will get first chance. We’ll go until all 15 pair are sold. First come, first served.

I bought five pair of the first prototype handles and they work great! The improvements made will make them even better! These are so much better than the nutcracker or the new Lyman handles, they make casting with the larger heavier 4 cavity moulds more pleasant. Everyone who casts with these molds should try a pair of these handles, they will be very pleased with them.

Mike, not at the moment. With the tooling costs running around $1500 per die for each style of handles, I would need more than 2 -3 pairs to sell before I re-coup my costs. If there was enough interest, I may be persuaded.

Red River Rick;
I have a set of four cavity H&G Handles. I had temporarily misplaced my Lyman handles. In looking at the H&G handles I discovered that by drilling a couple of holes to match up to the Lyman blocks, the H&G handles worked perfectly (not just "OK").

So, you should be able to easily "double drill" your Lyman handles and they will fit both sets of blocks (at least I was able to do that with the H&G Handles).

Thank-you for that "Tid-Bit", every little bit of information helps. And in this case, may be really helpful.
