I finally just finished my very 1st kit gun build.
It's a trade gun from Pecatonica river supply. it took around 80 hrs to complete.
I made some mistakes, but overall it didn't come out too bad.

Its a Colerain 54 cal smoothbore
the lock is an L&R Trade lock (throws a lot of sparks)
overall length is 58" weight is close to 9 lbs
I used a walnut stain on the stock (2 coats) and I used super blue on the barrel, let it get real dark, then I took a scuff pad and lightly polished it till I got the aged look.
I'm taking it to the range today for the first time. Can't wait.

Great start! I'm going to use one of my smoothbores at the rifle matches this summer. I usually shoot a better score with a smoothie than a rifle on the same course and targets! Probably because I don't need to be concerned with trying to see a blurry rear sight.

Great choice on a 28 ga. 28s shoot ball very well and handle enough shot to get it done

Great job! It looks very nice and your are going to have a lot of fun with it! I have a L & R trade lock on my Fusil de Chasse and it is a great lock. You'll like your choice on the bore size. Have fun and let us know how she shoots!

Trade Rifle is a good start for a beginners build. Seen a few novice fellows over the years buy advanced kits only to give up when attempting to put together. I've always believed there are no mistakes in building a first rifle. >Just more conversational detailing.

Congratulations Flintlock1812.

I took it out for the second time and it shot real well.
shooting straight on about 2 1/4" low at 25 yds. I'm using 70 grains of 3F, .015 patch and .530 rb
I figure 80 -90 grains should put me right on the mark.

No more powder, change your sight picture. In fact drop down on the powder a bit.
Try bottom of front sight, or raising on the rear. On one of my guns I needed to just be able to see the wedding band, and bottom of the front to get rifle accuracy.

what rick sez - try dropping down to 60 grains of 3f and raise up the front sight to have it's base just visible.
