[SIZE=3]Aquired a 95 win clone 30-06 with a broken stock for a song. Am restocking now and would like any load info or experience loading for this rifle, kind of hesitant about a pound cast having had problems with a 141 R.E.M. In the past.

Sometimes highly specialized questions like yours go begging for an answer for awhile. I have one in .30-40, but the stock is just fine. It sounds to me like you got a really good deal. I don't do pound castings myself, but find slugging the bore to be a good place to start. Then, using a fired case, I find a boolit that is .002" over the groove diameter and start it into the case, carefully close the bolt on the case and allow the beginning of the rifling to push the boolit back into the case, carefully remove and measure. That's usually a good start for the diameter and length. Once in awhile I've run across a situation where the overall length turned out longer than would function through the action, so then you have to adjust accordingly and just "go with it". You'll probably want a boolit in the 200 gr. weight range, but maybe a gas checked 180 gr. depending on what you want to do with it. I guess your rifle was made by Mikoru? High quality rifle.

There are very well made rifles. I have one in 30-40 that has been shot extensively with cast bullets. With .310 diameter bullets it will deliver 1 - 2 MOA accuracy depending on which bullet, power and so forth. I have never done a "pound cast". Most commercial 30 caliber rifles do well with .310 bullets. Some with larger and/or worn throats might respond better to .311 or even .312 cast bullets, but .310 is a good place to start with your rifle.

^^^True words these.
.310 is where I start when trying cast in a 30 caliber rifle. Seldom do I have to wander up or down much to find what will group best. I have a Winchester 1895 in 30-40 and while the sights do little to help me, I can usually manage around 2 MOA for 5 shots with a 311-291 over 18.0 grains of 2400 at 100 yards.

I've got one of these too, in 30-40 Krag. I got it during my lever action period. Unfortunately, it has sat in the safe since then. I acquired dies and brass but other projects interrupted this one. I hope to get back to it this summer. I've bookmarked this thread, no matter that it is short. Good information here.

I have one of .30-40 reproductions in the carbine version. Best results have been with the Lyman #314299, ww alloy, sized to .311"; weighs about 205 grs., 20 grs. 5744 for about 1640 fps muzzle velocity. You might also try Reloder 7 and H4895. Seat the bullet to slightly engrave.

In a pre-'64 Model 70 .30-06, the same bullet shoots quite accurately with 20 grs. SR4759 (1665 fps) and 21 grs. 5744 (1660 fps), .311" diameter, with the bullet slightly engraving. I feel sure either of these loads would also work well in your gun. Again, Reloder 7 and H4895 may also work well.

What is a "pound cast"? Never heard the term before.
