I'm wanting to make a small loading board for my 50 cal never actually seen one in person so about how thick should I make it ?

I've made a few of them for various calibers. For the .50 I usually make it about 3/8" thick. That way the top is flush and the bottom of the ball will protrude slightly into the bore.

I made mine from 3/4" cherry wood. Drilled a shallow pocket ( around 1/4" deep) that just fit over the barrels corners to center it and 1/2" hole thru. I finished it with tru oil and heavily coated the holes then polished them back out to size. On one end I drilled a t hole for a lanyard.

There is no standard, so I just make them the way I like them. I usually use a piece of 3/4" oak and cut it out to a attractive shape. I then space the holes for the RBs in a pattern according to how many you can get on it. I chamfer the edges of the holes on the top side to make it easier to start the balls. Remember to drill a smaller hole for a lanyard to hang from your pouch or strap. Mine usually hold 6 or 8 patched balls.

This sounds like the one I made also, made to hold 9 prb

Can y'all show me a pic? Daughter and I are not sure what this is for. We are still learning.

Mine was simply for hunting so 5 balls were plenty. I also had a second one inside the possibles bag though. I simply pathed the ball and pushed it in place with the starter nub on the short starter.

Can y'all show me a pic? Here's a link to what a ball board looks like.

Never considered wearing a Ball Board only because I already have too much stuff hanging around my neck. (horn's chargers patch knife flashlight.) When taking off a hunting coat items lanyard have to be taken off in progression as they were put on. Something I cannot ever remember for the life of me. I'm the only'est P/B hunter that requires sometimes 10 minutes or more to remove his hunting jacket that I know of.__

They simply hold a patched round ball together so your not fumbling with rifle patch ball and starter in the field.

I see. Seems easy enough to make and always have wood laying around the shop. Thanks for the info. Never seen one or heard of one so naturally we were interested in what it was.

.50 ball board on the bottom (rifle, .490 ball and grease lubed .015" patch), 1/2" holes ... .62 ball boards on the top (smoothbore, .600 ball and grease lubed .010" patch), 5/8" holes - all boards are 3/8" to 1/2" thick.

just found a nice piece of oak in the wood pile at work today like your bottom pic and your design was just what I was planning on 5 balls inline ! Thanks all for the info ...

I've taken 3/4 inch thick scrap walnut, drilled it for .50 caliber and then ripped it lengthwise which gives two 3/8 inch thick ball holders. They look a lot like rfd's design and work great. I open up one side of the holes with a file so a patched ball is a tight push through.
Most of the ones I make only hold 6 balls so they are legal in New Jersey. ;)

It seems like the guys on the range who use these, spend a lot of time fiddling around with them. I don't see them as all that much of a time saver. Where they shine, is to make one to hold 3-4 balls spaced closely together, that easily fit in your front pocket to use for hunting. That's plenty for chasing deer, unless you are a miserable shot.

.

This is one I made for my .36cal T/C Seneca.

When I made it (3/4" thick walnut), I surface bored one side to fit over the muzzle (centering the PRB), then notched each shallow recess to accept my barrel's under rib when seated on the muzzle for loading.

I hang it on the front of the shoulder strap of my possibles bag, for ready access while Squill hunting.
