View Full Version : Polishing sizing dies and different sizing lube.

I noticed that it was difficult to resize some 8MM Mauser cartridge cases (fired in a well worn Mauser and were expanded somewhat more than usual). I was using an old CH resizing die. I checked it out and it did not look very "slick" or "polished"inside. I polished it with 400 and 600 grit wet or dry paper. Each grit rotated on a "padded" arbor in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions. The arbor was rotated rather slow and moved into and out of the die as rapidly as possible (hand held) using a variable speed electric drill. The attempt was to get a "cross hatch" pattern of the honing or polishing (as in honing an engine cylinder or brake cylinder). This was repeated with crocus cloth. It produced a very polished surface in the resizing die. Using RCBS resizing lube (sparingly) the 8 MM cases resized MUCH easier and looked a LOT BETTER. Measuring the resized cases showed the same diameter as the cases resized before the polishing of the resizing die. The reduction in effort to resize the cases was remarkable. I may have to re-polish more of my resizing dies. Has anyone else experienced this result.

Just curious, Safeshot
