Got a fourth hand 788 in 22-250 with the longer rifle length barrel.
Nothing against little bitty jacketed thingies but I'm thinking about reboring to a cartridge for cast boolit shooting.
Something that will function through the action and be a worthwhile upgrade.
Any yall had a 22-250 redid?

That's got .35 remington written all over it if the magazine is long enough and wide enough at the shoulder ribs. Or .30 BR maybe?
Best, Thomas.

.300 Savage would be my first thought, just big enough to make casting easy and small enough to be economical with lead and powder, while also being a good deer and smaller game gun. (How's that for a run on sentence?)

If you shoot it first, you won't want to do it. Never heard of a 788 that wasn't a great shooter.

Betcha could sell that 788 for enough to buy a new Savage 110 in .308 and have some change left over.

I am thinking along the lines of Richdog, perfect chance to make a 22/250 out of it. lol

I do like the 300 savage, but if I was spending bucks to make a dedicated cast shooter, it would not be a short necked 300.

Guess I will check to see if .35 Remington and .338Federal will cycle out of the magazine.
But like you were saying about short necks, I don't want to go there.

.338 Federal has the potential of being a fine cast cartridge if formed from 06 brass and trimmed another bore diameter or so longer. Did something like that with a 7-08 788 in the early eighties when testing out ideas for developing my cast deer rifle. The .28 Long Neck (30-06 brass sized in a 7-08) looked like a beer bottle with a gray cap and cycled through the 788 just fine.
Eventually I settled on the .375x45-70 with a 9/16" long neck; reinvented the 9.5 Mauser [smilie=l: with smokeless.

Any how, now that I'm thinking about it some more, if this 22-250 gets a redid done to it then the final result may as well be cast friendly as opposed to just making do with a jacketed cartridge.

The 22-250 788 has a shorter action than the .308 788- the .338 Federal won't fit. You should really just trade that long range varmint slayer for a .308 as Rich said. 788s in good shape bring good money although the 22-250 is the most common one. I would love to have it- that's what I grew up on.
Best, Thomas.

YMMV.

I tried a .35 Rem factory round in an old 22-250 788 mag I have. Nope. Don't fit.

A 788 in .250 Savage might make a good CB rifle!
