I a thinking about a 38 super 1911 and am wondering if the ejector is different than a 45 acp. The plan is to fit a 45 acp upper to the frame, but if I had to change the ejector every time I switched uppers, I'll pass.

Thanks in advance.

Check factory part numbers

Looking for a 1911 man to chime in.

The glock factory literature says no lead--all mine have shot lead like no other.

I believe a 38 ejector is offset to accomodate the smaller base diameter of the cartridge compared to a .45 acp.

Yep, not the same, won't interchange.. 45 ACP slide won't even go on a frame with a 9mm/38 Super ejector mounted on it.

I believe the feed ramp on a .45 is different than a .38 Super and they actually have two different frames. Have heard of .45 being converted to the Super but don't know effort ($) involved. 38 Super to 9mm not much of a problem.

Sir, the frames are typically the same.

The ejector is offset, but the barrel can either be ramped or non-ramped, and I believe this is what you're thinking of. (There are ramped barrels for .45acp etc too).

The frame ramp is designed to deflect the bullet, guiding the round into the chamber.

The ejector is not hard to change, just remove the roll pin.

The slide ,extractor and ejector all need to be changed for a reliable functioning 38super.
The slide has a different slot to clear the ejector and a different radius bolt face.
The frame ejector combination for 9mm 38sup and 40sw are the same.
I would think trying to use 1 frame will not be a quick swap....

You wont get great reliability in a 45 gun running 38 super. 38 super slide wont go on a 45 ejector, 45 slide wont work on a 38 super ejector. You would have to swap parts. Yea its only a pin, but not something you can do repeatedly.

Now I ran a 1911 without the roll pin holding in the ejector. It was a parts gun, it was over 30 yrs ago so I didn't know better. But the gun did work without the roll pin holding the ejector in.

Leave the pin out, it is very easy to change calibers.

With a two upper pistol, just the ejector needs to be swapped out.

Both barrels need to be the same, either ramped (Nowlin/Wilson) or (Para/Clark) for the two styles of ramp barrel beds milled into the frame or standard non-ramped barrels. If you use ramped barrels, I would use the same manufacturer so when fitting and clearancing, both barrels will have close outside dimensions reducing fitting each barrel individually to a standard frame bed. Standard non ramped barrels are easier to fit without a milling machine but a ramped barrel is the norm these days for full house comp 38 Super rounds for the added support.

Just FYI, I have a very early .38 super frame 4xxx with a Colt .45 ACP upper. Works fine. I've never tried to take it back the other way to .38 super, but believe it could be done. Might be that in later years the parts changed enough that this would not be as simple a conversion.

It can be done, whether it is supposed to be able to or not. Sometimes tolerance stacking works in your favor. I had a Colt Delta Elite 10mm that I built a surplus .45 top end for, then a coworker gave me a 9mm Springfield Armory slide that I bought a barrel and magazines for that also worked on the Delta Elite frame.

9mm from a steel framed Gov't Model has very light recoil.

Yes it is. At least the series 70 was.

I have a Caspian frame with a Caspian 9mm/38 Super slide, both ramped barrels and a Para 45ACP ramped barrel and slide. I use a Super ejector W/O mod and simply change uppers and mags to change calibers. I do need to change extractors between Super and 9mm to maintain reliable extraction and ejection. Life is good
