At one of the local shows about ten years ago I came across a fellow who wanted get rid of a box full of molds and old gun magazines for around $20.00, (he just didn't want to take them home!). Well, I bought the lot seeing as though there were at least 8 assorted Lyman/Ideal molds in the box in various states of "condition" and several aluminium molds as well. I got rid of most and kept a few that I figured I could use. One that I've kept, (but haven't figured a use for) is an old Ideal, 308241. It casts a PLAIN BASE 150gr .30 round nose boolit with a crimp grove and 3 grease grooves. I cast a few awhile back and they look nice, but remelted them as I had no use for them at the time.

My M1 carbine is the only .30 I have that MIGHT make use of this "oddball" although I figure it's about 20gr too heavy for the little .30 cartridge.

Anybody here have any idea on what that mold was designed for other than plinking or small game with a .30 rifle?

Again, it's a PLAIN BASE design.

oldhickory:

It was a "standard" RN bullet for the .30-30 Winchester and Savage (Marlin recommended flat points; they were goosey about magazine KABOOMS) and the .303 Savage, introduced in Ideal Handbook No. 16 (1904). It was carried along in both 125- and 150-gr. weights (I have a mould with one of each), and later re-designated #311241 until it was dropped around 1968 (it was a special item for the last few years). The shorter 125-gr. version would work better in the carbine; they are fairly common and you should be able to find one on eBay or from the "mould lady".

I am interested as I have an old Winchester 94 in 30-30 and it might make a decent sillywet round. Are you willing to part with it?

Thanks! Maybe I'll check with "The Mold Lady" and see about a 125gr mold for the carbine.:drinks:

I hadn't thought about that. I want to cast a few and see what they'll do in my .30WCFs.

I know this is an old thread, but how did you like it? I have a handful of 308241's that a buddy cast for me. I shoot them in my Marlin 336cs. Throw 6.5gr of Red Dot under it and it is a dream to shoot. Best dang "tin can desperado" load I know of.
