removing the barrel from a Remington Model 660 Mohawk rifle

Hi folks,

New member Jeff/1911 here. I am looking for advice about how to unscrew the barrel from my Remington Model 660 rifle in 222 Remington.
I have a machinist willing to cut back the barrel to the desired length and recrown, but must remove the barrel from the action first.
Is it as simple as clamping the action in a vice and carefully unscrewing the barrel, or is there a pin that must be removed first?

I don't believe the barrel is pinned in place/ But clamping in a vise is a recipe for scarring, crushing, or springing the action, A barrel vise is needed to lock the barrel good and then an action wrench to turn the action off. These are not an interference thread but are tight. Breaking loose from the shoulder can take some force to do. Clamp the action wrench onto the action as close as possible over the front ring to avoid twisting the action. A simple barrel vise can be made from 2 pieces of 1 1/2 bar stock 1 piece 6"-8" long and the base 10"-12" long. The first piece listed has 2 holes drilled thru 3/4" + for bolts or ready rod. The base has 4 holes drilled 2 3/4 NC to alighn with the holes in the upper. and 2 3/4 clearance outside to bolt to a bench top. A split aluminum, brass, or hard wood block is then made with the hole thru .005-.010 smaller than barrel dia. These set around barrel and are clamped between the bars tightly. You may even want to apply some powdered rosin to get more grip. The action wrench is then put on the action and used to unscrew it.

Any gunsmith worthy of the name can shorten, recrown, and reinstall the front sight on that barrel WITHOUT removing it from the action. Love those 600/660 Rems.

If you buy the proper equipment and take the time to remove the barrel.....Simply replace it with a "better" one!!!!!

Haha! If you can find a better one . Those 600s will shoot tiny little groups IMO. Had a Mohawk 6mm that was a true 1/4 min rifle with Sierra 87bthp. $90 at K-Mart in 1973. The OP .222 should do that.

Using a barrel vise and a Remington action wrench the barrel just unscrews. It may be a little tight but it will come out. With a round receiver you should be able to recrown in a lathe with just a steady rest and a 4 jaw chuck without taking the barrel out, or by buying a Brownell's crown tool and pilot. I was thinking the 660 had a pretty short barrel already are we fixing damage?

Welcome to the forum !

While most good gunsmiths are machinists, not all machinists are gunsmiths.

The barrel needn't be removed - If you can't DIY, hie thee to a real gunsmith, not some parts-changer.

The 600 & Mohawk 600 had 18-1/2" barrels; the 660 had 20" barrels. And welcome to the OP.

181/2" bbl in 308 is LOUD. it did however unscrew without difficulty, not as handy with a 22" bbl but much easier on my ears.
