Anybody know if the RCBS ladle holds more lead than the new Lyman ladle ???
While casting bullets for my 45-90 , i thought i would run a few rb's for one of my flintlock muzzleloaders.
Turns out my new Lyman ladle doesn't quite hold enough lead to fill the mould with t he little bit that leaks out arouind the sprue hole .
Last time i cast these i used the bottom pour spout , but have since plugged it , and now only ladle cast the bigger bullets.
thanks
Joe.

As of a couple years ago, the RCBS ladle was still the biggest of the two. Don't know about any changes since then. I went with a Rowell #1 ladle for those molds requiring more alloy. Works great, but you can't pressure pour with it. Only trickle it in. Filing a vee into the Rowell spout, with a triangular file, tightens up the pour.

That must be one awful large round ball! I cast huge shotgun slugs with a Lyman.

It's a 4 bore , ball is 1750 grains ( 4 oz. ) it's just shy of 1 1/16" in diameter .
If i remember right it is about 1. 050"

44man .
Once i get the RCBS ladle thing figured out i have to go looking for a powder measure that will drop 300 -400 gr charges of 2 F black powder :roll:
On a somewhat more serious note. Do you (or anyone) know why the RCBS ladle is made with a square/flat section on the top of the ladle, i also noticed that it has a flat on the back side of it .

Joe, just buy a #10 Rowell ladle and you'll be able to pour cannon balls! [smilie=1::-D

Joe,

The flat on the RCBS ladle is to skim the top before dipping.

For what you want to do Rowell looks like the way to go.
