Was Ideal 338237 designed as a plain-based mould for .33 WCF? The example I'm asking about casts a bullet with a nominal weight of 195gr.

I have a picture of it in the back of my early '70s Cast Bullet Handbook. It lists the 195gr. weight and a short-cherry version of 145gr. My Handbook prior to that has no mention of it. Several months ago, Floodgate generously provided me with an Ideal mould chart that targets its appearance in 1904, the year following the introduction of the .33 WCF.

338320, the standard GC mould for the .33 appeared in 1907.

I have the opportunity to acquire a 338237 to cast for my .33 WCF - and possibly avoid using up my dwindling supply of cheap .338 gas checks. :( Does anyone have some experience using this bullet in a .33 at 1650-1800fps? How about ~2000fps?

XT----------: no experience with 338237,But have a 4c 338337 (224 gr nominal)& shoot those @ around 1500 fps in my 33 W. See no reason why the lighter ----237 should not work well, but suspect you will need to take base protection measures if you are marching much beyond 1600 fps.. If you are not taking up the mould, please put me in contact with your source...fwiw,Onceabull

Thanks Onceabull,

What is your charge behind that 338337?

I've had some good results using card wads cut from "metallic"-looking cardboard drink cartons - like Dr. Pepper and Coors Light - and using them as poor-boy gas checks. So far, this has worked OK on some larger cals. at ~1800fps.
