Early on in my pewter hunting, I had purchased and melted down a few items I wasn't 100% certain were pewter. I had cast everything into 1lb Lee ingots molds, but decided I should gather up all the early ingots and make one big one. (The guys at the scrap yard are good about scanning for me, but I knew they weren't going to stand there and XRF 30+ pieces for me.)

Took the single 23lb ingot down today and got it scanned.

I was fairly certain that I wasn't going to have anything weird like Zinc in there, and was relieved with the results.

Thought there might be some lead in there, but didn't expect that much.

Rookie mistake. There is what you KNOW is pewter and there is what you THINK is pewter. Don't mix the 2. It will still sweeten the pot. You just need to adjust your calculations.

I think you still have 23 lbs of very useful metal. And, you know what it is!

when i smelt anything............ i cast 20 pound bars, and a 12 ounce puddle. stamp both. each batch averages between 60 and 64 pounds. then i will snip off a small piece from the 12 oz. puddle and remelt that and pour a quarter sized splatter. these will be sent to bne once i reach 20 samples. when i get the results back, each bar from each batch gets stamped with the alloy results. then 50% of all that is tested will be put up for sale.

I don't like the 7% copper but you can thin that out to use. As was mentioned above, in the future, don't mix the I think it's pewter with the I know it's pewter.

Thanks. Lesson was learned. I'm confident everything I've melted since then is 100%. :-)

Do all scrap yards have machines like that? I have some large pieces I would like tested. Just stuff I picked up along the way. Been sitting in the garage 10+ years because I don't really know what it is.

if you cannot find someone with an XRF gun, melt a small puddle off of it and send it along with a pound of lead to bne, he can test it for you. he is a member here.
