Sorry boys... I didn't want to hijack the other post!

my question is this: what is reasonable accuracy for one of these guns? The other day I benchrested and shot at 150m. My load was 63gr. Goex FFg, under a 350 gr flat point Boolit and a grease cookie... And accuracy was horrible! (I have a Lee Shaver midrange sight on it). Groups ran about a foot and a half!

By contrast my rolling block BPCR gun was doing about 3" and I was quite proud of myself because I am still new at this black powder/cast Boolits nonsense.

What at kind of accuracy are you old hands getting? Any pointers you would share with a noob?

With my UBERTI 1876 ...It likes the 300gr RN and 59gr 0f 3fff or 26gr of IMR 4198........this get the boolit out at 1290 fps :-)

OOps mine is a 45-60 so you could a few more gr. of BP in yours !!!!!

God morning
Have 45-60 and a 50-95.
Are you casting your 45 slugs with soft lead ? We use 40-1... Also 2F will foul the barrel fast. We switched to 3F Goex. 10 rounds are no issue now between wipes. You might consider a # of Ol Einsford as it will ignite very consistently. Might try LR mag primers also.
Lube... is it BP lube ?
Our 50-95 will shoot 4 inch and less groups at 150 yards with me sitting behind cross sticks and a "Buckhorn" rear sight. The 45-60's will do the same with the stock rear sights.
Our rifles are high # Chaparral .

I am casting at 20:1 right now. The lube I am using is home brewed; about 1/3 beeswax, 1/3 paraffin, and 1/3 Vaseline. What is your preferred bullet, Mike?

So - can anyone answer me this: can I swap 1873 Springfield trapdoor 45-75 reloading data for smokeless powder...for my 47-75? Or am I going to blow myself up? In the Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook all the pressures under 20,000 CUP... I would like to start around 40 gr. of IMR3031 because that's what I have at the moment...

Can anyone comment on that?

Also, because the brass is like hen's teeth up here in Canada - I am not resizing the brass and hoping to stretch case life. Can I get away with this if the brass is always going to be fired in the same gun? And do you guys roll crimp your Boolits?

Also - just to double check - it's the 49th edition of the Lyman manual that has 45-75 load data right? I looked in the 50th edition at Cabela's and they didn't have any data on it...

I load mine with smokeless trapdoor 1886 loads. My Uberti 1876 had the so-called Uberti chamber. I do not resize my brass below the neck. I use Jamison Brass.

Good morning
I would shoot a softer cast with BP. You can use pure lead with no ill effect. I like 40-1 as that is plenty of tin to get good fill out and it makes the bullet tough enough for what I do with it in the 50-95. A 20-1 mix was considered a "hardened bullet" back at the time.

My lube is 45% olive oil / 55% beeswax. In very hot weather we add another spoonful of bees wax to help stiffen the lube. In very cold we go 50-50. Have never had any leading / stiff fouling using 3F Goex which produces 1465 fps crono'd and a variation of just 6-7 fps in 10 loads. We steer away from paraffin as it is a petroleum product as is Vasaline.

Whatever smokeless powder you are considering using give that vendor a call and ask them. I called Accurate back when we were looking at using 5744. They were very helpful and happy to use our crono'd data with a 350 grain cast of the same 40-1. We used the suggested starting load then worked up until the 5744 gave the same velocity which is plenty. Brass ejects and measures the same as the 3F loads. Comes close to equaling the 3F loads in accuracy but 3F is still tops.

Hello, Mike
You transposed the numbers on your powder. It's 5744, was a filler required to get closer extreme spreads

Well thanks for that Mike!

When you say 45/55 - are you talking about weight or volume?

Also - what do you define as "cold"? I live in Canada and I no longer go out in -30C... but will in -20C all the time. Will your lube handle that? I really love this rifle and want it to shoot!;)

I would leave out the paraffin and add some lanolin about 10% give or take. I use the lyman 330 gr hollow point with black it does pretty good I get about between 3-4 in. at 100 yards.

That is volume for the lube. Powder... This getting older and living at 8000+ does things to thinker. Thank you Rick !
The 5744 loads have no filler in our 50-95. It shot just fine without filler.

At 20 degrees you probably need to adjust to more Olive Oil. At -20 you may need to build a fire. Never have tried it at that temp.
