These .54 Cal Lyman Plains bullets shot really good the other day in my new little Scout and my dad's Renegade, i figured i had better get some made up. The mold is really starting to perform now (2nd casting session) i only had a few that i culled back. These all weigh with 1 Grain of eachother, 459.5 to 460.5

I have the same .54 and .50 mold, they shoot great in my fast twist barrels and my TC 1-48 twist barrels. I see posts of folks having issues with them, often folks don't spend enough time getting to know their guns, make quality slugs, and do due diligence to either to make them perform.

That boolit is my favorite for my Renegades too. I usually load it ahead of 95grs. T7. It really smacks hogs down fast.

100 % pure lead?

No, but close. These bullets read 6 BHN on my Cabin Tree lead hardness tester, pure lead is 5BHN. They load really good in my dad's Renegade, he shot them greased like Maxi balls (the way they were intended) i wanted to try paper patching a few, i ran some through my .538 sizing die, then paper patched and ran them back through the die, they shot really good this way as well.

These things shot REALLY good from 2 different rifles, 2 different powders and charges, i was shooting 70 Weight grains of Swiss 3F, and my dad was shooting 100 volume Grains of Goex 2F, Targets were 80 Yards, my 3 shot group was close to an inch, and my dads was close to the same. This bullet in .54 Cal doesn't seem to be at all finicky? its a DARN good looking hunting bullet, nice wide Meplat, should be a HAMMER on Game

I picked this mold up brand new fairly cheap at an estate sale type thing, i was thinking more about my dad when i got it. His rifle shoots a Maxi Ball really good. I got him to try a few of my paper patch bullets the other day, he shot a 1" group with them or right at it, i stil don't think i will ever convert him from grease bullets to PP bullets

This is my dad's target, the bottom 3 vertical shots were my PP bullets i talked him into trying, 515 Grain from my custom .533 Mold, the top 4 were These Lyman Bullets greased and loaded like a Maxi ball.

192018
And here is my target, Same Lyman bullets above except sized to .538, Double wrap onion skin paper patched and ran back through the .538 die. I tried the .539 but this particular bore was to tight for that, i had to resize to .538

How do these bullets load into your barrel or barrels ? Are they a slip fit ? Do they load like a R.E.A.L. ? Or do they need to be sized ?

I didn't load and shoot any greased so i don't know first hand? I didn't pay attention to my dad when he loaded, but he did tell me that they loaded nice (better than the Maxi's) i am a dedicated Paper Patched shooter, the ones i shot were sized to .538, then 2 wraps of paper and back through the .538 sizer, they slide down the barrel REALLY nice. As i said previously i tried .539 first, i loaded it, but it was really tight, so i sized the rest to .538, this particular barrel has a tight bore, my other Scout 54 barrel takes the .539 great, my Lyman Great Plains Hunter .54, 2 Renegade 54s, and New Englander .54 all like the .539, And a friend of mine (Forum member Harleysboss) tried my .539s through his Knight MK-85 and he said they loaded great. I have found .539 to be the ticket for most .54s

Thanks, I recently picked up a 54 Caliber Renegade and at this time don't own a mold for this caliber.

Hard to beat a good ole Maxi Ball, TC designed it to shoot in there 48 Twist Rifles, the TC molds in 54 Cal can be ridiculously expensive. If you are on a budget The Lee R.E.A.L. Is a another decent bullet and that mold is only 20 bucks. These Lyman molds are 70-80 bucks new, i have yet to hear 1 good thing about Lyman's customer service, you can read a TON of articles on guys having problems with there molds, makes me VERY HESITANT to buy anything of theirs! If this mold hadn't been at a Garage/estate sale i would never have bought it new.
