Let's see how bad everyone is at hoarding, whether it's lead, brass, powder, primers or anything else. I just started getting into reloading about 9 months ago, I haven't had a chance to hoard anything besides brass. Once the weather breaks I'll be sifting for lead at a few local outdoor ranges. But here's what I have hoarded so far.

Are those all mixed or sorted by caliber? Quite the heap of brass.

wow...just wow.

At first glance, I thought all those red containers were the new plastic coffee containers (3 lb...I use a lot of those), then I seen the 3 metal trash cans full of brass, then realized those coffee cans weren't coffee cans, they are the Home Depot 5 gallon buckets...then I thought, WHOLLY MOLLY, that's a lot of brass...no need to take a photo of my plastic coffee containers of brass

Kinda compulsive a hobby, isn't it?
Finding lead is an even greater challenge because it isn't concentrated in one spot. I find WW at 1 out of 10 intersections, and batteries only have 2 posts. Dentists don't use old X-rays anymore, and many ranges have halted scrounging for lead. WWs are now only 40-60 % lead. Plumbers don't pour lead joints and roofers use plastic instead of lead.
Get it while its there for the taking.
Your well on your way to providing a lifetime supply, no matter your age.

Wow! You're going to need a lot of lead for all that brass. Do you work at an indoor range or something? That is an insane amount of brass to collect in under a year.

Ok...I drooled on my phone a little just now. What is it about casting and reloading that makes one want to be a hoarder? Thanks for the pic.

what happens is you collect all that brass then realize you either don't have a gun in that caliber or you'll wear out the one you do have trying to shoot the brass you have.

wanna know why I have 5-45 acp's and 4-9mm's?
or why I have a 40 to 44 cal swage die set?
umm hmm free brass..

I do work st an indoor range. I take home on average about 5 buckets a week of range brass. All of that is unsorted right now. I'm in the process of building a roller type sorter like jmorris built.

I am going to start casting in the spring time. A few outdoor ranges around me will let me sift their backdrops for lead. Once the weather turns nice I'll be getting lead too.

mjkonopka

We have the stupid chunks of rubber tires as the backstop. Makes it impossible to get lead.

mjkonopka
03-26-2017, 10:26 PM
Yah it does, but I'm happy with getting brass from there. Plus there are 2 outdoor ranges by me that will let me sift the backstop. I already talked to the RSO's at both ranges. They said as long as I don't dig I can sift. So I picked up a metal colander and will just scoop the dirt and dump the lead in a bucket. Now I just have to wait for the weather to get better.

Oh my, I just saw the 3 metal trash cans full. Even after qualifying done at Ft Polk, I didnt see that much empty brass. I just have a couple of shoe boxes with brass. Just wow. Great job. Keep that up for a few years and you could retire.

The room is not large enough to get the other wall in the picture but this is my brass storage. Sorted by caliber and headstamp. The milk crates under the shelves are lead ingots, separated by alloy type.

While you are waiting on good weather, you might start sorting the brass. Swap and sell what you don't use, make a few bucks towards some powder and primers.

My first impression was coffee cans too...till I realized I was looking at the trash cans in the rear. Pretty good haul so far.

IMPOSSIBLE you say?
no sir.
did you know rubber floats.
did you know the lead will jam together at the base of the deflector and can be cut out in large chunks?
if you can get the lead out even with large chunks of rubber in it you can separate the two by slowly pouring the mixture into a 15+% saltwater solution.
the crumb rubber will stay on top while the lead falls to the bottom.

pull the lead out and rinse it off.
pour the used solution on your neighbors ro err dilute it with more water and let it runn off.

Holy heII y'all are awesome. I feel so at home here. How did you get so much lead? I can't even imagine getting that much lead. I would be happy to get half a 5 gallon bucket of range lead. What ingot mold did you use? Those are some nice stacking ingots.

I am sorting the brass as much as I can, it takes a LONG time to sort that much brass. Plus I'm taking in more brass than I can sort. That's why I'm building a sorter right now. I just got the chromoly tubing and am working on a design on autocad. I do want to sell a little of the calibers I don't shoot, but what if I get a firearm that takes that caliber one day? Then I won't have brass, lol.

By impossible to get lead from my range I meant they won't let me [smilie=b:

mj- You should save all of the .32 ACP and .380 ACP. You should get a premium price over the most common 9MM and 40 S&W should you decide to sell or trade. .380 ACP is more difficult to discern from the 9MM. I have to set them opening up on a flat table and check for height with the .380 being a tad shorter than 9MM. The bonus to this method is that you can check the primer for Berdan primed brass. A magnet will find brass washed steel casings too which I have found several in 9MM. There might be a market in the .22 LR brass for the swagers. Some even load .25 auto.

The triangle ingots do stack really nice and it puts a LOT of weight in a small foot print.
the concrete is 10 inches thick, so far holding good :)

The triangle shaped stuff is all reclaimed indoor range lead and the Lyman mold ingots are COWW
left to me by a freind who moved away. I'd rather he still be here but such is life.

Those Homer buckets of range lead weigh on average about 130 pounds +,
I'm load testing the floor in that corner :p

WOW those are some super stashes!

mjkonopka
03-28-2017, 01:50 PM
It's really not that much concentrated weight. I'm going to guess that bench is about 8'x2', so that's 16ft^2. That's 2,304in^2. At 5000 pounds, that's only 2.17psi. To put that into perspective, let's say a car weighs 3000 pounds, all that weight is concentrated on the contact area of the 4 tires. Well say that's around .5ft^2 per tire, so 2ft^2 total contact area, that's 288in^2, that's around 10.42psi. You could easily add 4 times the amount of lead you have in that area and not worry about breaking the concrete below it. So that means if you really want to load test it, don't stop collecting :-) :-) :-)

You have an addiction problem and are a 'Brassaholic' . The only cure is lack of storage space (never happens) or an angry wife who tells you "No more brass ! ! ! !" and means it. I only have 9 five gallon buckets of mined bullets in the garage.

Good luck with your addiction problem. Just because brass is free doesn't mean you need to pick it up.

Makes my 3 bags of 200 cases each look very small. I think the difference is I load and shoot then reload again. If I had that much I'd share some, trade a bunch for fun. sell a lot because I know more is coming every day and enhance my shooting equipment. I am aware of the reasons he is "hoarding" and they are valid. Secretely, I'd like to have much more brass and lead than I do.

I definitely do not want your back ifyou have to move, wow, you may have the heaviest workbench in humanhistory, at least in a per square foot comparison.

I probably have 100lbs total between every consumable I have for reloading. I feel inadequate

If it's free or just really cheap, and you have space under roof, you can't have too much.
Sooner or later it will be trading stock for something you need.
Remember even bad or unknown powder grows something good to eat.

My biggest hoarding problem is powder... obsolete powder.
Whenever a powder is discontinued I'm afraid to use what I have left because... well... I might need it someday :groner:
I have to have around a dozen partially used canisters of various discontinued powders on the shelf right now... someday I'm just gonna' make up my mind to shoot the stuff.

I sorted all the steel cases and shotgun shells out of all that brass, it almost fills 2 55gallon drums. I can't wait to fill the other 5 drums I have ;-)

The very thought of moving, scares the crapola out of me.
My "safe place" is behind that bench :bigsmyl2:

Make sure those drums had something safe in them. Many chemicals will corrode brass. Would hate to learn that the hard way!
