So I'm working on loads for a new to me 4 screw k-38 6in. I have a 4 cav 348429 and 357446 as well as the Lee 158 round flat. I've loaded and shot lots of the 495 and 91 wad cutters out of this pistol already with the normal 2.7 grs of bullseye and stellar results. The wad cutters just fall of the face of the earth past 50 yards. it likes the Lee 158 both plain base and powder coated bb about equally. Now for the question, do I need to try a 358477 or does it offer anything over the designs I have. I really like the 429 I'd just like a little more speed than that sledge hammer of a bullet can safely be loaded to in a 38. But even at the pedestrian speed I'm pushing right now it's accurate. Can I expect a similar level of accuracy out of the 358477 at 100yds and around 1000fps? What experience do you guys have with this design?

I have the Thompson gas check molds too, both the solid and hp versions. I haven't played with them much because I'm cheap and gas check s are not anymore.but that said, It's next on the list to cast up.
I'm a little lost and thought I'd run this past the brain trust here before I broke down and bought another mold. Thanks for your time gentlemen.

You don't really say what you are trying to accomplish at 100yds. On an old 4 screw K frame I think a lot of 1000 fps 358477's might be kind of hard on the old girl. If you are trying to knock over ram targets in hunters pistol just use a 158 RN at max std pressure. If it's simply accuracy you're looking for at 100 yds both the Lee 121 TC (9 mm bullet) and the Lee125 rf are extremely accurate to 100 yds plus and can be run at 1000 fps with many std pressure loadings. I use the Lee 121 tc for the majority of my shooting in my K38. If I don't hit what I'm shooting at with that bullet I know where the fault lies.

My 6" model 14 S&W 4 screw has had untold thousands of the 429 boolet put thru it using alloys ranging from WW thru 50/50 shoved along with 3.5 gr. of either HP-38 or Win. 231 powders. If I want to `hot rod` a little I dig out the model 27.Robert

You might consider trying the Lee TL358-158-2R or the Lyman 358311. Both these boolits give excellent downrange accuracy in my K38 Target Masterpiece as well as my Model 15.

I like the 358477 for some more energetic loads, but a K frame is a K frame, be nice to her.
For my hotter stuff I use a Model 28

I absolutely love the 477 at close to 1000 fps from a K frame. Here is some reading for you. http://shootingwithhobie.blogspot.com/2009/01/p-phenomenon-by-saxonpig.html

I would have no problem with that in my 14-3 K frame either. He stated he had a 4 screw K frame which I was under the impression was not recommended for warmer loads by S&W. It definitely would not blow it up.

What I'm trying to do is come up with an accurate load that has enough velocity and power to plaster coyotes. That kinda rules out round nose. SWC at about 1000fps would have been better wording. I have no load data on the 358477 for the 38 so I really should have asked if that velocity was even possibly at standard pressure loading. Bottom line is, is it a good enough bullet that I need to own the mold?

Okay. Think about dropping to a 140 grain boolit. A number of people make molds in that weight with the SWC desugn you are looking for. 1000fps is doable with standard pressure loads at that weight.
