I had one for a short time in the very early 70's. Back then rifles wre easy come easy go. How times have changed. I still have one in 30-30. Very accurate arm that's staying with me untill I ........
The 30-30 magazines ( I have 3 ) are going $125 or better if you can find them. They're rare, but the 44 mag magazine is even rarer. The last one that I saw was new in the box at a tidy price of $200. If you have one with your rifle, I'd figure out a way to put a lanyard on it securing it to the rifle. DON"T LOOSE IT !!!!

Duct Collector I have two 788,s in 30/30 and bought a spare magazine from Numrich gun parts for 27.50 + shipping about 3 months ago. They show they have 44 and 30/30 in stock, I will be ordering one tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.

...............788's were sure nice rifles. An old friend of mine who has passed on had a collection of 788's and he had one or 2 of every cartridge they came in. He also had one that was in 44 mag but he'd had it converted to 454 Casull.

The very first rifle I'd ever bought was a used 788 in 243. I paid $125 for it including a Weaver K4 scope. This was in 1978. I also managed to break the bolt handl off :-)!!

I never have seen one. So I certainly wouldn't sell it.

What is surprising to me is how thin the barrel looks for 44 caliber.

Nice shape too.

I have several magazine style rifles whose magazines are worth more than the gun! I use braided fishing line to secure the mag to the trigger guard, 80lb stuff I think. Simple, it works.

I've always fancied on in 30/30 for cast boolit shooting, never seen one though. What I'd really like is one converted to 35/30/30 like on the cover of Colonel Whatshisname's cast Boolit Book/Mag.

I have never had a 788, but have picked up two beauties recently, a 222 and a 22/250.

Can't wait to get them percolating.

In the late 1980's there was a 788 in 44mag on a table at the Lima Ohio gun show for several shows. I remember seeing it 4+ times there with a $450 price tag on it. The reason I remember it was I was trying to decide between it and a Browning B92 in the same caliber.

Oh yea... I still have the Browning
