Has anyone had any luck with cast bullets and low velocity in the 30 carbine blackhawk? I have had good luck with jacketed and cast with gas checks at full velocity, but I am trying to get a load at around 900fps for small game and it's giving me fits. I have 93 gr cast 105 gr cast and 115 gr cast to work with.
Thanks

You may have tight throats in your .30 Blackhawk cylinder. Mine had .308" throats(actually a couple were a rch tighter than .308"), so it did poorly with cast. Ended up trading it....

in my 30 cal blackhawk i never got reliable ignition=thus no accuracy.
however i read somewhere someone has tried 32-20 brass in it,and, after fireforming they were happy with the results, and, had the rim to headspace on....just a thought.

Using RCBS 115 Grain RN GC bullet sized .309,NRA 50/50 lube and 5 grains of Unique. In this pistol the boolits have to be seated a little deeper so that the casings can be seated on the case mouth or else the round does not enter the cylinder far enough to allow the cylinder to turn. So with this boolit it must be seated so that none of the front band is protruding beyond the case mouth. Very slight taper crimp is also necessary. Muzzle velocity is somewhere between 900 & 1000fps. It groups well at 25 yards. Another loading that has been working for me is 11.5 grs of IMR 4227 with the same boolit sized .309. Military cases are a bit thicker than commercial cases, but both work fine. The use of 32-20 cases is written up in an article by "Beagle", a well known member of this forum and the entire work-up and investigation is posted among the articles by other well known members and you can find it easily by going to that section. I followed the article, communicated with Beagle, got myself 500 new casings and had a ball. Essentially one has to trim the carbine case back a bit (the exact details are listed in the article), which of course reduces the overall length of the loaded round. He tends to favor the Lyman mold #311008 which has no GC, but they aren't really needed. The major idea here is that there is a rim present which then controls how deep the casing goes into the cylinder and there is never any "cylinder tie-up". You can also then use a roll crimp as well if you want to. The entire concept worked very well for me. The carbine dies worked well on the 32-20 cases. There are other powders as well that you can use and other boolit molds as well. Its worth checking out and or printing it out. Hope that this has helped. So Good Shooting. LLS

Just recently got a Blackhawk .30 with .309 mouths. Tried the soupcan sized to .310 lubed with lla and loaded with no gas checks. 3.8 of 231 shot good but high at 25 yards. I was using small pistol primers so that may have been an issue.

The accuracy potential is there it's just a matter of getting a lod to hit on sights.

I can't seem to find that article. Looked and did search. I have 32-20 brass and would like to try it.
Thanks to everyone, for all the help.

try 3.5 gr 700-x with small pistol primers. and bout 100 gr boolits.
with the 32-20 brass, i trimmed bout .0020 off them and sized my boolits at .312
have 310 throats.
this load worked better then the 5 gr unique did.
and is a real nice rock chuck load.
